Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Then just ignore my comment about 8000miles a year makes you a real cyclist, better yet ride your bike. Now dont feed me because I do not want to get blocked

So are you planning to shave your arms after it heals up?
In case the anatomy of the two pictures is not clear, the first picture - the hairy appendage - is my upper thigh (the wound is around 10cm in diameter). The second picture is my bloodied elbow. And apart from my legs, I'm not planning on shaving anything else that doesn't come shaved (er, let me re-phrase that).

You are not a real cyclist until you ride 8,000miles a year, surely you must know this!
You mean I didn't need to crash to prove I was a real cyclist?

I'd make something up about fighting off a crocodile that was trying to steal my beer.
This is actually quite a common occurrence in Australia. But it's not so much the beer stealing I object to; it's when they also try to hit on your girlfriend. and then want a lift home

I'm really having a bad run lately. This week I fall off the bike. Last week the bolts fell out of my seatpost and I had to ride 45km home with my saddle in my back pocket standing all the way. I think that hurt more.

Sigh. I wish my crashes were that mellow.

Two in the past year:

Crash #1: woke up in a Berlin (Germany) ER. Bike hub detonated and pitched me to the tarmac @ 22+mph. Face road rash, black eye, concussion.

Crash #2: two weeks ago tomorrow locally on black ice. Grapefruit sized contusion on my hip, shoulder sore as hell, pulled groin muscle. No road rash, it WAS ice. So at least you slide. I'm healing. And my Cannondale Six13 was relatively unscathed. A couple of scratches/dings to my shifter/brake levers. Road rash heals. Shimano doesn't. So the bike's OK. That's the important thing of course.

And I never stopped riding, not really. 2 days for Crash #1. 0 days for Crash # 2. It never hurts when I ride. Only when I stop. So why stop?

Ha, the right chicks can dig the bike scars.
Right now my knees are kind of swollen and my shins are the prettiest dark rainbows of colors thanks to a good ol Russian squeeze on a night ride. From friends so no hard feelings.
But it's still amusing to kick back and share battle scar stories. Though the crocodile one is amusing in all sorts of ways.

The other unfortunate thing was that the bike - my brand new Look 585/Record/DT Swiss 1450 - seems to have taken some damage - both Record shifters are badly damaged. And for those who are keen to point out how fragile carbon fibre is in a crash - especially carbon bars - my Cinelli Neo Carbon bars survived enough force to damage and twist both shifters without a scratch; but of course I will have the bars - and everything else - checked properly at the LBS.

Glad you are not too bad off... What we really want to see is pics of the bike damage!!!

My doctor said something similar, except he called me a real idiot for not having an X-ray. I told him X-rays are for girls and MTB riders.

Too late. The bike is now fixed. I picked it up yesterday and am debating whether to take it out for a ride, since it is about to start raining. And this all started because I took it out after the rain last week.

The only real damage to the bike was to the shifters - both got dinged up pretty bad. (Still not sure how I managed to damage both sets of shifters on each side.) They are still functional, but I don't like the idea of weakened brake levers so I decided to replace the whole things (so much for the idea of Campy re-buildability - the parts cost more than just replacing the whole things.). Do you have any idea how much Record shifters cost?? That hurt more than anything else.

As mentioned above, it was interesting that the force of the impact was enough to damage both shifters, twist them around, and twist the stem on the steerer tube, and yet my LBS tells me that the carbon bars don't have scratch. I'm not sure aluminium bars would have taken that impact without bending, so I'm very impressed with these bars.

The wounds are healing nicely, with the help of some antibiotics, a tetanus shot, and the most painful ointment known to man (which my doctor maliciously insisted I use daily), which stings with the force of a thousand bees. There is still a whole pus thing happening on the elbow but it is clearing up. I tried a run on the treadmill at the gym today but only lasted 15 seconds before the agony started. I guess cycling is going to be the only way to recover.

Yet again I am reminded of the miraculous injury prevention properties of lycra. I wonder why motorcyclists don't wear lycra instead of those useless leather outfits that serve no real purpose. Don'y they realise just how much protection brightly coloured lycra will give in an accident?

That looks pretty good.
Just be careful when it turns white, cause that's a 2nd+ degree burn, take esp. good care of those.

Well, I mentioned to a guy in our riding crew the other night the color of my shins and laughed about how I could never get an abercrombie model now. He laughed and said "Good, battle scars on chicks are ****in hott" ... the other guys quickly ran over to agree. It really depends on the guy. But me and my fella love sharing battle scar stories haha.

To test the theory of being a real cyclist.. Immediately after you crashed did you go oh my leg or is my bike damaged?

If you chose the latter you are a true cyclist..

Not too bad. I remember the last serious crash I got into, my wounds were white because ALL the skin was gone. They healed up pretty nasily, and were weeping for about 10 days after the crash.

I was riding about 5 days afterwards.
