Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Storck Scenario Build - Got the CF Fever!

First of all, I would like to say hello to everyone, and say thank you for all of the great advice that I have recieved, as a bikeforums viewer for quite some time. At the same time, it is a love-hate relationship. Listening to what everyone is doing has given me the unstoppable urge to build up a new bike, really for no good reason. Here is what I have so far.....

I just bought a Storck Scenario C1.1 frame from a pro cyclist about an hour from me that I am picking up on Monday (2005 model approx 5000 miles). I also picked up a Scenario C1.1 frame (brand new 2004 model off of ebay). Both are 55cm. I am going to pick one and then sell the other on ebay sooner or later, or I may just keep both if I like how it rides enough, just in case.

I have a set of Mike Garcia wheels, which I bought thanks to all of your great reviews! They are really sweet and have improved my riding a ton (DT Swiss RR1.1, DT Rev spokes, Speedcific Hubs). Running them on Michelin Carbons.

I also have a FSA Carbon Pro Compact ISIS crank that I plan to put on the front of the new bike, as I do a ton of climbing.

My problem is this.....do I strip down my generic frame bike, with 105 components to build up the Storck, or should I try to accumulate Ultegra components and build it up? I am not super concerned with weight, as the frame is only 1180 grams and the wheels are 1484 grams. I have to tear down my old 105 bike (which I only have $700 in as an around towner). Is Ultegra really that much better than 105? I have heard mixed things. Some say that they are the same, only a little heavier. I am considering buying a bikesdirect parts bike and then selling the leftovers, but I am running out of cash, as I bought 2 frames. Anyways, it should be an awesome bike. If I use the 105 parts and the used frame, I can build it up with the MG wheels for under $2000, which is pretty good. Any good recommendations would be appreciated!

Seems to me you can go with the 105 and be riding this bad boy in a day or 2. From there, you can take your time and upgrade at your leisure.

Now, if the plan was to get it done by March, then skip the 105 altogether and start buying. Good luck, sounds like a great project.

TWO STORCKS!!!?!?!?!
OMFG!!! LOL
Damn you!

Pics? I wouldn't mind the eye candy..
Go with the 105 - screw Ultegra. It's just weight savings and 0.001ms faster shifting.

Good Luck!

Yes pictures, we need pictures! By the way, what did Mike charge for the DT Swiss wheelset?

I will post some when I have a chance. I will pick up the used frame monday night, and the new one will not be here for 2 weeks probably. From the pics I have seen, they are both going to be amazing.

As far as the wheels, I'd rather not quote Mike Garcia's prices, but they were a few bucks cheaper than the RR1.1's listed on his website, as I didnt get the more expensive aero spokes. I am sure that he didnt give me any special deal, as his prices are already really low. If you are interested, give him a call....they are definitely worth it and dirt cheap for a sub 1500 gram wheelset, especially with 28 radial up front and 28 2x/3x in the rear. I used all aluminum nipples except brass on drive side.

Some people say Dura ace is the same as Ultegra only lighter and that ultegra is the same as 105 only heavier, that would imply that 105 is the same as D.A. is the same as 105. And that is simply not the case. They may all be close but they do get better as you move up the line. If I had a storck (which I do have Storck cranks) I would not want to put 105 on it for too long. Go with the Ultegra ASAP. Then post pics!!!!

Who do you ride with? Would love to see it when it's done. BTW, I live in Simpsonville.

Thanks for the help so far! I am still not giving up on upgrading components. I have been cruising ebay for a few hours today looking for ultegra and dura ace components with a few miles on them. I'll see what I can find over the next few weeks, before I give up and go with the 105. Of course, if I do that, then I have to keep the old bike intact and find a new stem, handlebars, tape, cables, etc.....and pay the mortgage and power bill. I think I am going to turn down the thermostat and put a coat on to see if I can save a few bucks.

Plainsman,

I do group rides with Carolina Triathlon at the Woodruff Rd location, so we have probably ridden together before. I have only been going there since the fall. I injured my knee training for a marathon in September, and the CT rides are the flattest in the area. I work in Spartanburg, and do weekday rides up by Bike On when the days are longer. In the summer, I ride over in GA in the mountains on the weekends.

We may have. That's the group I usually ride with, although not with the A's. If the weather is decent, I'll probably be there this next weekend. I'll be the tall skinny guy on the Trek 2300. Congrats on the neew bike to be!

I got the used frame last night and posted some pics....

https://www.geocities.com/jamiewilson3us/

Take a look. The first is the bike being raced in a TT this summer. The second and third I took when I got home. As fas as the build goes, I think that I am going to take my time a little bit and shop around for a lightly used bike or new bike to strip for Ultegra or Dura Ace parts. Then put my 105 on the stripped frame and sell my old frame or keep it around as a spare. Still no idea what I will do with the extra Storck frame once it arrives. I dont want it sitting around, but selling it seems like a waste too. We'll see when it gets here and I will post pics once my new frames twin gets here in a few weeks. Perhaps anyone want to trade a whole bike setup for a new or slightly used Storck frame, 55cm? - I may post an add in the for trade in a few weeks or something. Sorry - just rambing!

I'm serioulsy thinking about getting a 1.1 and was wondering what the ride is like as it's very hard to find reviews on this bike. Is it fairly comfortable after 3 or so hours in the saddle or do you come back a little shaken up?
