Who wants to tell me that everyone bonks?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In a true Bonk your muscles would not contain enough energy to cramp. It's really not uncomfortable, I find it kind of funny.

I've never bonked to the point of being unable to continue, but once I was trying hard to keep up with three riders that were much faster than me... kept at their wheel for about 20 km, but 5 km before the meeting point (an overpass) just couldn't stand it any more. I let them go and was barely able to ride to meet them.My legs were stiff and woodenlike. At the overpass, it was very difficult for me to climb it in my 42x 21! And I had still another 30 km to my house...
Somehow I did it but took me two days to recover.

That sounds more like muscle-fatigue and cramping. Bonks are a no-pain state where your body is just numb. There's no energy and you feel kinda clammy and cold (even in the middle of summer). You're crawling along at 15kph desperately scanning the ground for discarded candybars and whatever else you can eat. Mostly you just want to lay down and sleep... don't do that, you might not wake up...

a few weeks ago i met some friends for what was going to be a two-hour ride with some leg-speed intervals thrown in. we knew that the weekend would be rainy so the decision was made to go do some climbing. total ride time of 3.5 hours with around 5000 feet of climbing. i did it on coffee and last nights dinner. now, keep in mind that i'm an overweight cat5 riding with 1's... i would have gotten dropped on my best day and this was far from my best day. i knew better and i paid... very rough day. praying to hit red lights on the final few miles of false flat on the way home... nodding off when we stopped... very rough day.

today was rough too.

My wife informed me the other day that she had read an artical on "BOINKING" in some cycling magazine. I informed her that eating right should not stop her from boinking. We then discussed the proper term so that she would not go out in public and announce that she felt like she was going to boink during a group ride.

Another thing I would want to add to the list is that if you ride in colder temperatures, you lose heat faster, so you need even more calories than if it's warmer.

Shh Mayukawa! Don't TELL them. Let them discover that on their own. Hopefully, when you're riding with them.
Have you no sense of the entertainment value of watching someone ELSE bonk?
(Or Boink, come to think of it.)

If you want to save them, you should just be there waiting with a box of Girl Scout Cookies.

M'kay, I didn't bonk - or boink. But it was a horrible experience that I gladly rescheduled for the week after.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I bonked, not got sore/stiff/whatever. I'm not even the least bit stiff today. I was very kindly given a Clif bar while riding, but by then it was too late, and we were almost back home. Odd that I carry enough stuff to fix my bike on a ride, but had no decent way of fixing myself when I break down. Time to get some energy bars....

My worst bonk I was about 10 miles away from anywhere, out in the Mojave desert, on a mountain bike. I had to leave the bike and walk to the nearest road with my legs dead, knees starting to lock up, stomach upset, shallow breathing, brain not working, having to stop and rest every few minutes. Sucked. And I had water, just no food.

Huh. I don't know how you could really confuse the two. They are rather different sensations. More to the point, I have always felt the limit of my endurance coming on. The few times I have bonked it has been a completely sudden out of the blue sort of loss of the ability to pedal or concentrate.

My Story:
It was a hot day about 100 degreesF. we had just gone about 30 miles and we were supposed to get some subway at about that time and fill the waterbottles. Then my dear mother told me that she didnt know where we were. we wondered around for about one hr and maybe a half. By that time i was moving Maybe 10 mph. finally we found the small town and we got some subway and water. Luckily we new our way out the other way for another 30 miles.

I was tired, sore, and starting to perspire, when the coffee shop appeared. I was so excited, I shifted into 34-16 and blasted the last block and right up to the door.

But before going in, I wiped my brow, cleaned my Oakleys, and wiped down the bike. There was a bit of dust on my Sidis so I cleaned them thoroughly before going inside.

It was a close call but if I had to it over again, I wouldn't hesitate. Not being able to pose down at the coffee shop is just not an option.

Never had it feel quite like that. Usually I get slightly nauseous, I see stars and tunnel vision sets in. My legs don't really ache or cramp, but feel like lead weights and it takes all of my concentration to keep the pedals turning. About twenty minutes after eating, I recover some and catch my second wind. Bonking or fatigue?

Yes, I guess there's entertainment value in watching somebody bonk... I went out on a ride with one of my friends a few years ago. The temperature started in the mid-60's F, but because of the strong headwind back, we were going more slowly than planned. After the sun started to set, it felt like freezing! We were still about 10 miles from our parked cars. I noticed my friend was going slower and slower, and then he stopped many times in the distance of one mile. So I knew he was bonking even though we were only into mile 40 of a 50-mile ride (on MTB). I didn't bonk, but I feel my body temperature dropping, so I had to try to get back to the car ASAP. I can't leave a friend behind, so I gave him my reserve chocolate bars. He didn't quite recover from the bonk, but at least he was able to rid the remaining few miles non-stop. Both of us felt like popsicles by the time we made it back to our cars. The feeling of reaching our cars must have been like sailors of old who finally see land!

I bonked. Last spring or the one before. We were nearing the end of a 25 mile ride; I had eaten a banana that morning but nothing else before or during the ride. I was feeling weird and couldn't keep up so hubby and I pulled over and I tried to get off my bike and my legs shook and collapsed under me. I cried a lot, and sent my hubby home for the car because I didn't think I could make it the 5 miles home. But as he left he encouraged me to try to get home anyway, and I rode on the sidewalk, walked my bike up hill (with several rests) and coasted down hill, and made it home in about 45 minutes. It totally sucked, and I've never forgotten to fuel up since.
