Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Roubaix / Zipp Upgrade Photos

Linda, god bless her little heart, gave me a bunch of cool upgrades for xmas. After staring at the parts for a few weeks, we finally got a few days off of work, and decided to tackle the project. I thought I'd post the progress.

The bike started life as a 2005 Roubaix Comp Triple. After some long hours and one very long night (4:30 in the morning on Thursday), the only thing left from the original is the frame, seatpost and handlebars. It is now a full Dura-Ace double with Zipp 404s.

After stripping it completely and giving it a thorough cleaning, the assembly began. Here a few pics of the progress from beginning to current:

Right now, it's bolted to the trainer and ready for it's first hammer session in about 15 minutes

Oh, and before anyone tells me to "flip it", it's that way due to an ongoing battle with a lower back injury, so don't go there

Later!

Steve

Can I ask why you bought a bike and then decided to change everything on it? Wouldn't have been much cheaper to just buy a higher level roubaix to begin with?

Outstanding build, and equally impressive components! Did you have any problems at all in the process? (I will be doing one as soon as I have the funds for the components I need and am always looking for advice.)

And as for the stem, it is refreshing to see someone who has the bars and the saddle so close in height, just as I do. I replaced a 7 with 17 degree stem for similar concerns as you.

In hindsight, yes it would have. But... it's a hobby, no?

Yea that's just crazy...who would buy a bike, strip it to the bone and build it back up with a higher spec....

Sexy looking bike.

You'd be surprised how many folks do that. The 'old' components are recycled for new projects...

In short...No! The wheel set alone is the difference in what the next level of a Roubaix could've cost.

Besides, no one else has a bike "just like" it. And then there is the pride in knowing "I DID THIS" Makes the ride that much sweeter, if you ask me, but as Steve's wife I might be bias

Not to mention maintaining and excelling in the "OCP" status

All in fun

Sexy bike Cheeseflavor, can we ride together

Linda

Speaking of that anyone interested in buying some lovingly used, but in excellent condition Ultegra components?

It is a hobby but I guess I just am not into the whole idea of 'disposable' money.

Especially for such a new bike. If you haven't noticed it is *much* cheaper to buy a top level bike if it fits your spec than to buy the framset and build it up. Forget about buying a whole bike and then switching everything out. If this is of no concern to you I have envy of your checking account.

I won't go into the whole OCP argument about components that are designed to save racers 1-4 watts used by rec-riders.

Psst...I just bought an 06 Roubaix Comp...stripped it down and built it back up with Campy Record. See the first post in this thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/161350-lets-see-your-ruby-roubaix.html

Not always. I paid $1855 after tax for my 06 Comp and I had recently put Record on my Salsa. I stripped the Salsa down for the Record parts and sold all the parts (well except for the FD) off the Roubaix. I couldn't have bought an 06 Roubaix frame unless I got an S Works which would have cost me MUCH more than I spent total for the bike I have now. I got about $600 for the parts of the Roubaix I sold off so I really got a frame/fork, headset, seatpost, stem, and a FSA SLK MegaExo crank for $1255 after tax. I challange you to beat that deal for a high end CF frame and those associated components.

Pedal Force frame $650, Fork $150, headset $50, seatpost $50, FSA crank $300 = $1250 before shipping and that doesn't even cover the stem and I don't get a lifetime warranty.

Am I missing something or did you say you already owned your record components...

how is that a valid argument?

Hobby: hob·by. Def: An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

If I was in this for the money, it wouldn't be a hobby, would it? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or rub anyone's nose in anything, seriously. I do it because I like to, and I like to have nice things. Doesn't matter to me if I save a watt or two or an ounce or two. How many people have fast cars and never race them? How many people have nice houses and never have company?

It's fun. At least it is for me. If it's not for you, then that's ok. To each his own. Just move on if you're offended.

Take care,

Steve

Only for about 2 months and he already owned the bike. It was an 05 and he had been riding it for several months if I am not mistaken. So rather than buying a higher end bike he upgraded his. Sounds like he spent less month to me.
