I have a road bike with Carbon handlebars, can I use clip on Aero bars or will it damage the carbon ? Do I need to switch to Aluminium bars before attaching the Carbon bars ?
Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Generally it is not a good idea to use a CF bar with any clip on extentions due to stress on CF factor. If you are going to use aero extentions then you need a Al Bar. Now that said, I am not sure about CF to CF (bar to aerobar).

Contact the bar manufacturer for guidance.

Your options are limited. The only combo that I know of is to use the Easton EC90 Equipe road bar (not the regular EC 90) with the Easton Aeroforce carbon clip-ons. Easton claims that this is safe, and I haven't had any problems with this combo in the last year and few thousand miles of riding.

This is the best advice. Some say they can be used with clip on aero bars and some say they should not. It really depends entirely on the bar and how it's made.

Kestrel makes a nice carbon fiber road bar that is designed to allow for clip on aero bars. It cost about $140 or so and is not that much heavier than their $220 model. I belive that their is titanium weave over the carbon? Go to the Kestrel site and read up.

Yes, I know. But, it discusses which of their bars are good to use with clip ons. As for where to buy them, I believe that Excel Sports sells them as do a number of others. For me, I have thought long and hard about the pros and cons of upgrading (if that is the correct work) to carbon bars and yes, they are really stiff, and supposed damp some road buzz, but for the cost and issues related to over tighening stem clamps, I will stay with my Ritchey WCS bars in aluminum. They cost about $70 vs. $140 to $280 for carbon handle bars. I would think that for the initiator of this thread, spending the bigger money on some really good clip ons, such as Syntace C2 and using an aluminum quality handle bar would be a good thing to consider. I looked closely at the Ritchey carbon bars vs their aluminum and prefer the profile of the ergo aluminum bars because of the "hump" in the drop and longer trail of the end of the drop outs that exist on the aluminum vs. the carbon. Not to mention the huge price difference...

I've got clip ons I just installed on my cheap stock alloy bars. One thing is that you don't just gently rest your arms in the pads and steer the bike with your hands. I often find myself grabbing the bars and putting weight on them, especially when reposition myself in the saddle. If I don't have them torqued down really tight, they don't stay put.

No it doesn't. It's a PDF document that discusses how to care for Kestrel bars, and that's it.

There is only a tiny one-sentence blurb on that document that basically says Kestrel EMS Pro and EMS Pro/OS bars are OK to use with clip-ons, while the EMS SL's are not. Why you couldn't just mention that instead of referring people to an irrelevant PDF document is beyond me.
