Spent the past 2 years on a 53cm Lemond. Let's just say "too big!" Over the past several weeks, I test rode many bikes, from 48cm - 52cm, including Treks, Specialized, Cannondale, Orbea, Felt, .... you get the drift. After the 2 years with the Lemond (my first real road bike), I now understand what fits and what doesn't.
Anyway, I ended up with a 50cm Cannondale R1000. I almost went for a Felt F2C which was also 50cm, but it just wasn't right for some reason. The next best fit was an Orbea Dauphine (sweet riding bike, and also 50cm). Didn't dig the paint, so passed on it.
I also rode a 48cm Cannondale, but it was too cramped for me.
So while the 50cm C'dale was right for me, that didn't mean that every 50cm would fit the same. I would suggest that you target a range and ride as many as you can. Some will be off the list quickly, while others may be harder to decide on. For example, I probably spent 2 hours riding the C'dale and the Felt back to back before I decided on the C'dale (I was trying to convince myself that I could make the Felt fit).

I'm 5'5.5" and I'm on a 49.5" custom-built bicycle. Very comfortable!

I'm about 5'6" during high-tide and I'm riding a 48cm Aegis Aro Svelte. But on a different Aegis I might ride a 50cm. On a Trek, a 50cm to 52cm frame seems to fit. On a Specialized, I'm most comfortable on a 52cm. As you can see, it really depends on the make and model because geometries differ as do the published frame sizes.

My 04 Trek 1000 was 52 cm. My Scattante CFR is 53 cm. The 51 cm Scattante fit good too. My next bike (prolly a carbon Trek) will more than likely be 52 cm.

I am 5' 6" exactly. I ride a 51 cm Lemond Maillot Jaune, a 51 cm IF Crown Jewel, a 51 cm Scattante R-650, and a 50 cm Colnago Super. All these measurements are ctc except for the Scattante which measures ctt of the seatpost clamp. I find that the Lemond and the IF are a bit long in the top tube for me, so I had to drop the stems to 90mm and go to Thompson (no setback) seatposts. The Scattante and Colnago fit just about perfectly. Of course, proper sizing will depend on the relative lengths of your legs, torso, and arms as well as just your height. I have relatively long legs for my height, so bikes that fit me in the seatpost tend to be too long in the top tube.

I am between 5' 6" and 5' 7". 54 is good for me. 52 is a tad too small.
A bike store fitted me to a 52, but I prefer the 54. It allows me to have almost no saddle-bar drop, whereas the 52 has 2" or so. Don't like this.

I am 5' 6", male, single. I enjoy walks on the beach and watching classic movies. Oh, I find that a 52cm frame usually fits me pretty good.

I'm a bit under 5' 7" and ride a 51cm (center to center) Lemond (that also measures 53cm center to top of seatpost). It has a TT of 534mm and with an 17d 80mm stem I have a saddle to bar drop of 3.5 cm. Although the Lemonds have a reputation for long top tubes almost every bike I've spec'ed out has a TT within 2-3 mm for this size. I'm still using the original Bontrager seatpost (with a setback saddle clamp), but with the saddle quite far forward in the clamp.
It would be useful if people quoting the seat tube / Bike size indicated wheither it is Center-to-Top (more common in the USA) or Center-to-Center (more common in Europe) measurement. Apples-to-Apples, you know.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack. My son is about 5'-5" and he's on a 54. It's a little big but manageable for the time being, knowing that he'll grow into (then out of) it. When he gets to be taller than me, we'll swith and he'll get my 56. At 5'-9.5", it's just a little bit of a stretch for me. My daughter is a hair over 5' I guess and she's got a 44. It's maybe a hair large for her, but both are on compact geometry frames so there's a little more wiggle room.

5'7" - 54cm Treks (although my older 2100 feels "bigger" than my 5200)
