Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking to see if anyone is using a Cross crankset instead of compact.. I like the 50/38 or 52/38 chainring configuration and it is 130 BCD.

I think the 34 on the Compact make it so I will be in my big ring too much.. Found a ritchey that is octalink compatible. Has anyone done this and are there any issues?

How about the FSA Gossamer cyclocross, it's 130mm BCD and 48/38:

Is the 3-4 tooth reduction that noticable?

I have a 34/48 but that's because my road bike IS a cyclocross. I bought a specialized tricross and intend to use to for commuting mainly but maybe for some competition if I get in good enough shape.

I'll have to change the tires that came with it. They are a bit too "threaded" even for commuting. I intend to keep all the rest stock. Maybe get different wheels if I ever compete.

I have one on my Look. Can't say that I like it any better than a compact. You get the higher gear but you are missing the lower ones.

I know a few people running touring/trekking cranksets (commonly 48/36/26) on their road bikes.

I always thought that gearing made more sense than a "Touring Triple 53/39/30" style.

Most compact cranksets are available with 50/36. That's the type I use personally. Perhaps that is enough larger than the 34 to get where you want to go.

How do you like the Tricross? I want a bike that will be durable enough, and have enough room for extras and bigger tires. However, I still want speed especially when I'm training. I've seen the Tricross online, but have yet to see it in any stores near me...

I think the Shimano XT and XTR hollow bottom bracket mountain bike triple cranksets are available with a 48 big ring as well... The whole crankset is around 850-860g, lighter than a traditional triple + ISIS BB setup. and strong!

48/36/26, model FC-M761

Nice crank and plenty strong. I prefer a Sugino though. They use 110mm BCD with 5 arms. You have a fairly big selection of chainrings available for them. The Shimano's 4 arm design with 94 BCD is a little harder to find larger sizes in. I give the Shimano the nod for outright strength though.

I like it but then again the last time I was on a road bike was 10 years ago. I don't have anything to compare it with.

Kinda. I've been using a cyclocross bike as a road bike.
