campy hidden headset—stuck stuck stuck

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

campy hidden headset—stuck stuck stuck

I got this new frame for $300—deda aluminum tubes, deda carbon fork and seatpost. it's nice see?

http://www.steaktaco.com/z060130.htm

well, I can't get the fork out to regrease the bearings—the compression ring on the carbon steerer is stuck (see attached). how do I get that thing out? I tried to chisel it with a screwdriver, then I tried a pipe wrench. nothing will grip...

ok I haven't actually tried those things but I will if you don't give me the easy answer. thank you really much,
-c

Have you tried just pulling real hard from the bottom? The compression ring shoud just stay stuck in the bearing retainer.

These are cartridge bearing aren't they. I don't think they are user serviceable. I could be wrong.

yup, no budge. would penetrating lubricant do anything? would it be bad for carbon composite?

dekalb's right. they are caged... but either way, you'd have to be able to get 'em out to grease or replace.

I have a Ciocc just like that! Sorry, I didn't do my headset (and my bike's got a Miche Primato headset on it) so I'd be of little help with your problem. Nice bike, bro!

thanks for the compliments, ettsn and chico...

it still won't budge after soaking it overnight in lube, I'll try my luck with the mechanics forum.
