Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fast speed

Today me and one of my buddys went mountain biking and on the road by the canyon we were in there is a big hill. So I decided to go down it and see how fast i could go. I hit 40 and it was freakin scary (but a pretty sweet rush at the same time). I ordered a helmet and am still wainting for it to come in so I was just thinking about how long it would hurt (if i fell) before I died. That just got me thinking about this thread that was on here a few weeks ago about people's top speeds and some of them were 60+. I mean were some of you not about to crap your pants? I can't imagine going that fast on a bike, but at the same time I want to do it. Might be a while before I get to since we don't exactly have a great selection of hills in West Texas.

I've never reached 60 mph, but I remember doing 55 down Tioga Pass Road with a tailwind. The straight sections were fine, but the turns were a bit scary at that speed. There were no guardrails, the drop off was several hundred feet, and there were lots of little fallen rocks on the road. I sat up and started braking gently.

FYI, Tioga Pass Road is about 8% in its steep parts, going from the east entrance of Yosemite Park to the town of Lee Vining. The descent starts at about 9500 feet and flattens out at about 6000 feet or so 7 miles later (if my memory is correct).

Be sure to sign an organ donor card if you don't wear a helmet . . . at any speed.
Have crashed at 38 mph (harmonic vibration); helmet was fine, but broke shoulder in 2 places even with my usual paratrooper roll over the bars.
Have done 53 mph on a tandem descent in the the White Mts. of Arizona.

Hmmm, the fastest I ever measured was 72+kph ~ 45mph going down Clinton Ave. from 9W toward Tenafly, NJ. If the pavement was in anywhere near decent condition, I bet I could hit 50. Anyhow... going down at that speed on that road is something stupid I doubt I'll repeat -- the speed limit is 25mph for a reason! (oops I just admitted to going 180% of the speed limit... on a bike, woohoo!!! ).
