How strong are CF seatposts?

How strong are CF seatposts?

Is a CF seatpost tough enough to support the rest of the bike? In other words, can I put my bike on a repair stand by clamping to the CF seatpost with no worries?

"Strong" is relitive. Unless you have an extremely heavy bike, a CF post should have no problem supporting the dead hanging weight of a bike. The problem may be the clamping load on the post by the stand clamp. CF posts are normally designed and subjected to this type load as they are usually secured in place by the clamping action of the seat tube. This load is spread out over a relitively large surface area with the remaining lower portion of the post secure within the tube.

The thing to beware of are concentrated point loads on the post by the repair stand clamp. Use common sense. Ie. Don't clamp too tight (don't ape it down), spread the load over as great of the area as possible, and use a pad so the post doesn't get scuffed of scratched. Contact the post manufacturer for specific guidnce if you have any doubt.

Do like I do, and just put an old non-carbon post in to work on it. Luckily my post lines up perfectly with a line for my height...so I can't screw that up. This way I can wrench on the bike, and not worry about harming the way too expensive seatpost
