OK, this would really be freaking me out if it were happening on the hip replacement side. It is not. But when I woke up this morning I had hip pain in the other hip...out of nowhere. Rode the trainer as usual for 40 minutes yesterday. No issues. Went to bed last night. No issues.
Woke up and the right hip muscle hurts. Seems to almost start near my very lower back on the right side, runs around the hip and down into my leg, with the worst pain in the hip area.
What, I slept on it wrong?
Popped a couple of I-B and we'll see what happens today.

Sounds like ITB, the Ilio Tibial Band. There is such a thing as ITB syndrome. I had it and am suceptible. If you experience pain along the outside of the leg, extending down from what you describe, this may be it. The pain tends to be worst either around the hip, or where the band goes over the outside of the knee area.
I surfed it relative to cycling once and found this. An interesting note is that, unlike all the crap that can happen from a seat that is too low, this is something that can be caused by one that is too high. Take it FWIW:
" Check to the cleats for excessive internal rotation position; consider slight external rotation temporarily. * Check for a seat height that is too high or too far forward. * Consider the use of spacers on the pedal and crankarm to widen the bicyclist's stance thereby reducing stretch on the ITB. * If the patient's foot is pronated, consider cycling orthotics. * If the bicyclist is using fixed cleats, consider switching to floating cleats."
Stretching the ITB is tough, but mandatory if you're chronic. After a ride, take your foot, put it on a table just below waist height, with the outside ankle in a towel. Your knee should be a little less than 90 degrees open. While stading on the other leg, push your knee toward the floor. You should feel the muscle stretch.
None of the other common stretches were as effective for me. YMMV.

Now, back on topic - if it really is a concern, call your doctor.
My father got a new hip almost a year ago. He'd be freaking too.

To answer your question....sometimes with me overuse injuries may give a slight warning sign and then occur really fast if I ignore them. I might get a few aches or pains that I can convince myself are just mild fatigue. When in reality it's the warning signs of overuse. Learned that the hard way with running and my IT Bands.

See the doctor asap! Still waiting for my replacement to fully heal. I'll have to keep an eye out for this issue onthe good one. Good luck!

Your body might be compensating as a sort of 'favoritism' for your replaced hip. I knocked my shoulder out of whack once and I would inadvertently favor it while I slept. My other shoulder started hurting.
However, why did you have your hip replaced? Were you in an accident or was it caused by some repetitive actions you were doing? Perhaps you're doing the same damage to your good hip without even knowing it. Food for thought.

I think it is the "I-T" band at issue here.
The I-B kicked in and it's not as bad now, but still there. That to me means it is muscular, and should be treated with a little rest and IB.
What bothers me in these situations is that I don't have a clue as to what caused this all of the sudden during the night!

None after.
Just a little before.
But again my confusion about this comes over WHY ALL OF THE SUDDEN? The amount of stretching I have done in the past has been fine for me....nothing like this has happened before for no reason.
The mystery is the maddening part for me.
FYI.....hours later now as I sit here on the air at work the one remaining sore area is actually right around the hip joint. The I-B helped. Just rested all day today....

Likely did something in the night that irritated it. That or did something during the day yesterday that didn't really "settle" in to soreness till you rested for a full 7-8hours. I know I'll often do too much with a muscle, and it won't 'tell me about it' till the following morning.

It could be a muscle imbalance- I mean, if that side is stronger and it's overcompensating for the weaker side, you could get pain as a result.
See a doctor. If it's a muscle imbalance issue, once you get medical clearance, see a physical therapist and ask for strength training for the outer thigh (abductor muscles), as well as quad and hamstring exercises.
I hesitate to add inner thigh exercises (adductor muscles), since you aren't supposed to adduct the leg in past the midline, and if you don't know about that, you could do more harm than good.

Could also be you pinched a nerve. There's a ciatic nerve that runs through your hip down your leg. My Mother-in-law had nerve pain in her hip, and it was on and off for over a year before it finally went away. The pain was almost unbearable at times.

The pain seems to be settling in the left buttock area actually now....I don;t know what the heck is going on, but at least the pain isn;t bad....just nagging.
You don't think it could just be I'm getting old and breaking apart do you?

If you need a new hip, just make sure it's the Recod/DA version, not a 105 setup. You gotta keep it OCP you know.
I think you just need to rest it up a bit. Lye on your stomach, get a buttock massage from the Mrs, and sip on a cold one while watching some old racing videos. Works everytime. May sound corny, but the buttock muscles are so incredibly neglected, it's no wonder why so many people have trouble when they workout.
Hey, we're high end, and we need proper maintenance.
It's therapy.

Make sure your doing stretches for your hip flexors. I played alot of golf in another life and really messed up my right hip flexor from playing 5 days a week. When a flexor gets tight it throws off your alignment, causes other muscles to compensate like Koffee said, and inflamation starts. Any physical therapist could show you how if indeed that is the prob. Stay healthy.

If I'm not mistaken the sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down across the buttocks and down the back of the leg. Sciatic nerve problems usually result in a deep, dull ache from the upper hamstring into the buttock.

There are a bunch of muscles back there.
From what he's describing it's not his hip flexors - those are on the anterior/ventral part of his thigh (psoas major/minor, quadriceps, etc) . He is having problems near his hip extensors/buttock muscles of which there are more than I care to list.
You can see the course of the sciatic on any online medical site if you want. Your pain could be a million things. It could be muscular or nerve - just because it hurts in one area doesn't mean it's that area that is injured. For instance your shoulder can hurt when you have gall bladder issues. Know why you get hoarse when having a heart attack or problems with your aortic arch? You guessed right - the recurrent laryngeal nerve!
Anyway. Just because you took ibuprofen and it helped doesn't rule out non-muscular etiologies. You're blocking a few big pathways that mediate more than just pain.
