Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

FSA Wing/Handlebar Tape

I have Campy components and recently purchased a FSA wing handlebar. On my other bars, I wrapped the cables to within inches of the stem. Is it desirable to do the same with the wing or is it possible to wrap to the curves and have the cables exit under your grip? Also interested in a computer mount that centers the computer in front of the stem. I saw one on another post that appeared to zip tie on each side of the stem. Any suggestions?

If you don't wrap near the stem, the CF is very slippy with sweat when you handle the tops, and you can't rest your forearms on the bars without killing yourself.

It depends if you just want to pose or not.

Docray,

I have to disagree on this one. I have mine wrapped to the flat spots, and its rather comfortable I wouldnt say the CF is particularly slippery, I actually rest my forarms on it all the time, even when descending.

I tried it both ways, exposed CF on tops and resting sweaty arms on them is a great way to kill yourself. There's a good reason why pros don't do this.

Thanks for your responses. I believe the bars you are talking about are the FSA K-Wing carbon fiber. I bought the regular old FSA Wing Pro. I do not know if it makes a difference as far as being slippery, but these are made of an alluminum alloy. They also do not have internal cable routing, so that was my concern about the cables, wrapping and grip.

same concern. There is good reason to tape near the stem.

Kind of a new area, even though the wing bars have been around for a bit...is it a little too geeky to tape to the stem? Apropos topic for me since I just got the k-wing CF bars, but hate the red markings. This would serve well to cover them up...

I think you would be best served by doing what you prefer. Were not talking KY on the bars here Docray. I've been riding mine for almost two years, here in Texas, and I would guess I sweat more than the Canadian on my average ride. Clearly I have yet to kill myself. AND for the record, I have always seen the alloy version wrapped all the way up to the stem. it would appear that they are designed for this.

No offense to anyone, but resting your forearms on the tops without having your hands grip anything else, is flat out dangerous, whether you have it taped or not. It's a good way to get yourself killed.

The key word of handlebar is.... hand. If they were to be used for forearms, they would be called forebars, or perhaps AEROBARS with arm rests.

Please don't ride irresponsibly guys. I would hate to come on here and find out one of you munched it, because some car pulled out in front of you and you couldn't react quick enough to stop.

We've had enough of our friends on here get killed, we don't need any more.

BTW mellowdave, that Cervy is shweeeeet!!!!

My suggestion: Wrap them far enough that the cables don't bind up or restrict turning the handlebars.

OMG, talk @ 'joe-safety.' Wow. Um, I've been putting my forarms on my tops for about a decade now (for select descending situations), and continue to do so on the K-wings w/ no problems (no tape on the tops either)

Aero bars provide the uber dork look, so negative on those - and sometimes it's nice to have a different position when descending thus the forearm trick.

I think that everyone is pretty able to make the decision of when it's safe to do so, but yes, all cycling requires decent judgement and a level of skill...

Thanks Patriot, I agree its dangerous, but like my 3 dollar hooker and Cigar habit, I just cant stop. I guess when I give up jumping out of airplanes on Sunday, I'll have to look at stopping that too.

A- Thats an MC1-1D see the big hole in the back?

, but more importantly, what makes you think Im not in my older years?

I DID get 4 years of misery in T-10's in the 82nd, but then I saw the light and went LRS.

Did not look at it that close, my bad (I've been a leg too long, now). I also had many years under the T-10's and "-" Bravo's....not much better. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt for your age. When I was under canopy, there was no digital cameras; therefore, the age comment.

So, when you guys do a jump, do you use your forearms to pull the cord?

It's not for me to tell ya how to ride a bike. That's up to you. I'm just pointing out that it really is pretty irreponsible to ride like that. You could easily end up out of control. Which is of course your problem, not mine.

The real problem, is that you could easily end up harming someone else, like an old lady crossing the street. After they need to go to the hospital for getting hit by some guy riding with no hands, maybe they'll think the same way, and that it was no big deal.

I'm a retired CWO. Spent some time jumping most everywhere. Roughest place ever was the Big D (acutally small - Dahlonega, GA), it was like jumping onto a beach towel.
