Campy D/A Mix, whaddaya think?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have D/A 9spd. right now, and my STI levers are bad, actually just one is worn out. Anyway, I like the hoods and shifting of the Campy levers, but there is nothing wrong with the rest of my drivetrain other than high miles, but it is all in good shape.

I don't care about looks as this is a race bike and has it's share of ugliness already, so with that in mind, what do you think about chorus shifters, rear derailleur and a wheels manufacturing cassette with a 10spd. campy chain? Am I correct in thinking that I can continue to use my D/A crank and front derailleur. I like them fine and they work well already.

What do you guys think. Any forseeable problems or compatibility issues?

Nope, not really. The crank and front der should be fine. The cassette would be the only incompatability issue, but if it's a conversion cassette, you're good to go.

You are upsetting the bike gods. Prepare to feel their wrath. I personally don't think you should mix D/A with Campy. But, whatever floats your boat.

I didn't intend to stir up trouble with the OCP crew. This is certainly not to please them, it was more of a function/budget question. I want to replace shifters I don't like, with ones that I do, but the rest of my stuff is ok. (crank etc.) Again, I am looking for FUNCTION for my well used (abused) race bike.

It will be fine...but be prepared to replace everything else soon. Campy is like a cancer...once it infects a bike...it kills all the shimano parts off.

Campagnolo AND Shimano on the same bike seems to conjure up some bad pagen mojo. Maybe, just maybe, the breaks but why not go Zero G or Mavic on that front? The fact that you posted this is a glimpse into the doubt you obviosly feel about the move. I'd say avoid it.

This is like a Catholic Bar Mitzvah. Don't go there dude. It's like some bizarre form of cross dressing or animal fetishism.

Leave this alone now, you are forgiven.

But we will never speak of this again.

Never mix anything Shimmy with anything Campy.

Never. Ever. No.

Stop it.

Personally, I'm all for the Shimano/Wheels Mfg cassette mated to Campy shifters and derailleur. I think it produces better results than the Campy cassette. I would recommend the Wippermann 10S or 10S1 chain.

As for the front, I see no problems there. While I'm not a big fan of the Shimano cranks, there's no reason to change it out if you have it and like it. The left Campy shifter should drive a front Shimano derailleur with no problems.

It's like matter and anti-matter... put 'em together on the same bike and they annihilate. Total matter-to-energy conversion, E=mc^2, all that. At least you'll go out in a blaze of glory.

I'm going to defy the gods of cycle posing and suggest that you could buy the Campy shifters and a Shiftmate from Jtek (see https://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm) to handle the Campy/Shimano shifting differences. That would certainly be a lot cheaper than buying shifters, RD and conversion cassette, and would work just as well.

Plus, you would infuriate all the posers!

Cheers,
J.
