Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Getting back into it...

So, I have decided its time for a new bike. I currently have a older Steel Pinarello Treviso with 9sp Campy Chorus.

I have two choices:

Choice A - Complete bike $5000
Pinarello Prince SL (2004 Model)
Campagnolo Record 2006 (Carbon)

Choice B - Complete Bike $4000
Pinarello Prince (2002 Model)
Campagnolo Chorus 2006 (Carbon)

Any thoughts? Im leaning towards the SL with Record as I have always wanted a complete record bike.

I'm partial to lugged steel so my opinion is biased. Does your current bike limit you in any way other than you feel the need to go lighter? If I was in the same position and I liked my frameset I'd probably just consider upgrading the wheels and/or go to a 10 speed drivetrain. If you don't like your frame, however, that's a different story altogether...

Well, there really isn't anything wrong with my current bike. Im likely going to sell it and put whatever I get towards a new bike.

I guess my primary reason outside of weight is that I want to get something a bit more modern. Not the greatest excuse...

I think the other reason is that I think Im getting a fantastic deal. I have been eyeing a Pinarello Prince for several years and they were always out of reach. Now, I can get an SL frame here in Toronto for $2500 which is remarkable. I called 2 other stores and they were $1000 more just for the frame alone.

If the current bike is in good shape, tune it up and ride it. Sounds like a quality bike. Personally, I would be reluctant to drop $2500 CDN on a new bike if I was just "getting back into it...", until I was fully hooked.

Okay, with that said, what is the primary difference between the '02 Prince and the '04 Prince SL? I assume both are NOS so wear and tear isn't an issue. What I'd consider is the price/weight ratio. If the SL is lighter, how much lighter is it and does the extra $1000 justify it?

My guess is that he already knows the feel of the hook.

Lots of options for 5K.

In that price range, you are probably right on both counts!

My Treviso is in fantastic shape. I baby it to say the least. In fact, one LBS suggested I could fetch upwards of $1000 for the bike. I may just keep it for a training bike.

With regards to the various options I have at this price bracket I am partial to Pinarello so I never really gave much consideration to other brands.

Really the only difference between the two frames is the fork and rear stay. The newer SL has a newer ‘onda’ (wave) fork that apparently improves the feel of the bike – and looks cool =) From a weight perspective, there really isn’t a difference between the two from what I read.

The only other difference is group – Chorus vs Record. They seem to be so close that one such as myself really can’t tell the difference.

So, it comes down to $1000. I suspect it would make more sense for me go with the standard prince and chorus group.

Anyone here riding a Pinarello Prince/SL that has some input?

Thanks to those who responded…you certainly have provided some much needed guidance.

keep the Treviso. It will be worth more to you than you can sell it for Always good to have a backup.

How about Option C: Buy the Price and send me the Treviso out of the goodness of your heart and wanting to make sure it went to a good home.

Really - if you have the $$$$ and always wanted a full Record bike, do it. Spending the 1g now is better than shelling out another 5g later when you decide you REALLY did want the Record.
