Do STI triple shifters work fine with double cranks?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do STI triple shifters work fine with double cranks?

Trying to save some money on STI shifters and can pick up the 6603 Ultegra STI Triple Shifters at a good price. Will they work with the 6600 Ultegra Double crank and the 6600 Ultegra Double Frt Derailluer? I know Shimano's compatibility chart says no, but have a feeling it will work just fine with the double crank as long as the set screws on the front derailleur are adjusted correctly. Any one have experience with this combo? Thanks in advance for your help.

I've used the 6603 on a double on my last bike. It is actually kind of nice. The shifts take longer because you have an extra click, but at the same time you have a lot of room to tweak the front derailer. I rode 5000 miles like that with no issues other than taking it to a different bike shop and getting told that my setup was all wrong and they could'nt believe I was riding it like that. I didn't go back there again because they were wrong!

I was told by Colorado Cyclist and another vendor that the left STI "triple" shifters will work on two or three rings in the front.

It works fine when set up correctly (lowest shifter position::inner chainring) and the derailer limit screws are adjusted properly (this will prevent the shifter from even being able to shift into the highest position).
