Well guess the idiots were out today

9:20am in Concord MA on Lowell St, riding right side of the road. Lady in a minivan pulls out of a street on the left. Stops, looks right at me and then turns left, almost taking me out and actually her right front tire goes onto the gravel shoulder on the right side of the road. You have to be a really special brand of stupid to

1. Look right at a cyclist coming from your right and then pull out in front of him. No need to rush, there isn't another freaking car within a mile!

9.40am Arlington Center, riding down a straight road and I hear an insistent horn behind me. I am one foot off the kerb but the car behind me decides not to pass me (which is fine). The hoot is coming from mr sh*tbox driving redneck in the piece of junk behind the first car. Come to a right turn, which I am taking, the nice car goes straight, the dumb*ss slams on his accelerator and misses me by inches, he is making the turn but is now going so fast as he flies by me that he cannot really turn and almost nails cars in the right lane of the road he is turning into. Really, the car in front of him only delayed him for about 8 seconds. Is 8 seconds worth my life?

You know, some days....

Anyway, the rest of the ride was gorgeous, cold but sunny.

Doggus 02-22-06 12:58 PM

dumb****s like that redneck will usually get theirs...not soon enough though.

flipped4bikes 02-22-06 01:11 PM

So how do you know he was a redneck?

That truly is an insult to Calvin and Hobbes. A stereotypical redneck would not begin to get Calvin and Hobbes, regardless of the boy peeing on a Ford decal.

patentcad 02-22-06 02:19 PM

Hmmm. Where I live the idiots are out EVERY day.

Get used to it. Anticipate them. EXPECT them. Always.

That's Cycling Survival 101. Motorcycling too.

True, my sincerest apologies to the pair.

My initail reactions are:
1. She never saw you, despite the appearance of looking right at you.
2. If she did, she probably thought, "Why isn't that stupid bike rider on the sidewalk where he belongs, I've got an appointment at the nail salon, I can't wait to pull out!"
3. Talking on cell phone.

rallen 02-22-06 07:05 PM

I was almost hit twice yesterday too.

Both drivers appeared to look right at me...

I think that people are not aware of reality.

the couch 02-22-06 07:27 PM

Anyone ever land a good snot rocket on some jerks window? I think this is fair retaliation.

BillyD 02-22-06 07:59 PM

That's . . . . that's just nasty.

But highly appropriate in appropriate situations.

DaemonLee 02-22-06 08:00 PM

I've sneezed on a car window accidently. Does that count?

Jesus Christ 02-22-06 08:33 PM

the idiots are out every day...

it's just how people are made.

Yeah, turn them into a safe, to be run over by other cars.

I did that to a tailgater whilst riding the motorcycle one day. I had a bad cold at the time.

When I looked back, the woman had a truly disgusted look on her face and the windshield washer was going full speed.

Hang in there baiskeli. I am quite surprised that where I live (Trenton, NJ) the drivers have been very courteous since I got my roadie last year. I also realize, however, that it only takes one idiot to ruin all of that. Be careful out there man. I just assume that they don't see me in the first place.

Cheers,

Brian

On an opposite note... I was behind a couple of cars today and there was a car that I didn't see in the turning lane of oncoming traffic. I didn't see her and she didn't see me at first. As she started to go she saw me, and stopped to wait as I proceeded on. How nice.

I don't know if she was being courteous or just blinded by the bright a$$ green jersey that I wear when it's getting close to dusk.

xSandmaNx 02-23-06 12:16 AM

do like me. i just attached an RPG to my aero bars... just the thing for idiots and heavy traffic.

Starclimber 02-23-06 12:57 AM

What's the best 'role playing game' for dealing with idiots and heavy traffic? Hapless Victim?

Kidding...I often wish steering column bombs were standard equipment on modern vehicles, and cyclists held the triggers. ErgoPow! for Campy, High Plains Brifter for Shimano.

Thanks. Someone mentioned that as spring approaches drivers get more aggressive and inattentive. Normally this isn't a bad place to ride.
