Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What do you guys think?

I am trying to decide on my first road bike purchase, been a mt. biker for years

I found an 05 Scattante CFR full Ultegra for $1270 at Performance, plus extra 10% coupon, plus team member worth of $120 dollars worth of stuff, I think it just can't get any better than this or what do you think?

Any advise will be appreciated, positive or negative

I did read everything about the scattante on BF so far and all seem happy

Thanks

For $1270, get it. As long as it fits you, though; that's waaay important.

The bike is a good price. I always check out the components and this one says that it is equipped with Ultegra which is a fabulous gruppo.

One reason some have backed away from the Scattantes is their very limited warrenty. I think it's only like 6 months on the frame. Many other co's give a lifetime on the frame. So look into the details of that before you buy.

My '04 Scattante CFR LE came with a 5 year frame warranty, 1 year on everything else. They may have changed things since then, but that's what I received.

I just called Performance tech support, they said the warranty for the Scattante is a life time warranty since its a Performance exclusive, they also said if it doesn't fit they will be happy to replace it with a different size she also said that they will replace it or refund th money if not satisfied

It all just sound great

just get it. my '05 CFR is 1 year old on March 5, and it's been a wonderful 11,000 miles. use the Performance points to get a new saddle and seatpost, and enjoy!

It's a great deal if you don't mind the bold branding on the frame. The frame otherwise must be just fine and the Ultegra build kit itself is usually $1200 bucks.

Before you take the plunge on either definitely test ride them both.

If I were just to look at the numbers, I'd say go for the Scattante. Less than $1300 for a carbon frame and Ultegra is an excellent deal.

I would reccommend getting a bike that fits you properly. The extra money is going to be worth it when buying from a local bike shop or an online dealer in which you have test drove the bike previously. Just my .02

If the Scante feels right when you ride it then ignore the other bike. If this is your first road bike venture you will probably love either frame regardless. Let yourself get into the road riding and you can always upgrade the frame later.

Where is the closest Performance shop that you can go to and test ride? Good excuse for a road trip.

The first word in Scattante is SCAT.

Think about it.

I always give the LBS a chance before I purchase. They're gunna be the ones dealing with the bike when you mess something up.

I agree with you Gienek, a year after buying my first mtn bike I needed to upgrade and lost some $ in the process, so I don't want to cheap up buying my first road bike now, plus the LBS factor where you get fitted and build some relationship with the local guys.

The second thing is that I rode almost 3000 miles with the local clubs on my MTN bike last year and enjoyed it very much, the rides vary from 30-60 miles and I want a bike which will be comfy for long rides, and from what I have been reading here on BF, every one is happy with their Roubaix

The 05 Comp comes very nicely equipped:

FRAME: Specialized compact design, high modulus advanced carbon composite monocoque frame, advanced composite seat stays with Zertz inserts

FORK: Specialized Full Carbon Zertz, monocoque high modulus advanced composite legs, high modulus carbon threadless steerer

HEADSET: Specialized Mindset, 1 1/8” integrated threadless, with triple sealed cartridge bearings, carbon cone with 2 each 5mm spacers

STEM: Specialized Pro, 3D forged alloy, 31.8mm bar clamp, 4-position adjustable, 4-bolt

HANDLEBARS: Specialized Roubaix, carbon racing drop, 31.8mm diameter

TAPE / GRIPS: Body Geometry, thin Bar Phat, cork ribbon

FRONT BRAKE: Shimano Ultegra

REAR BRAKE: Shimano Ultegra

BRAKE LEVERS: Shimano Dura-Ace, STI

FRONT DERAILLEUR: Shimano Ultegra, 31.8mm clamp, bottom pull

REAR DERAILLEUR: Shimano Dura-Ace, short cage

SHIFT LEVERS: Shimano Dura-Ace, STI, flight deck compatible

CASSETTE: Shimano Dura-Ace, 10-speed, 11x25t

CHAIN: Shimano Dura-Ace

CRANKSET: FSA CK-8680, hollow carbon 2-piece, five arm, super high modulus unidirectional fiber arms

REAR HUB: Mavic Ksyrium Equipe, 24 hole, sealed freehub, Mavic QR

REAR TIRE: Specialized All Condition Pro, 700 x 23c, 120TPI, aramid bead

TUBES: Specialized Turbo Ultra Light, presta valve

SADDLE: Body Geometry Alias, microfiber, hollow rails

Oh, and scrambling 6 of the seven letters in COLNAGO gives you CALGON. I guess that means Colnago frames are an 'ancient Chinese secret' - the secret is, they're all made in China!

Same thing goes with CANNONDALE - the letters spell out ANAL CONNED. Better stay away from those too!

Seriously - implying the quality of a brand by looking at some of the letters in the name is one of the stupider things I've seen someone on this forum do.

Just remember that the Scantante is not an entry level bike. It is a full carbon fiber frame with the full Ultegra groupo on it. So I wouldn't be worried about getting a cheap bike, provided you can ride it and like the way the bike feels.

I am not going to dispute the whole LBS thought, but I am also cheap and don't like spending a lot more at a bike shop, because I too had to work for that money and the LBS has to earn their way into my pocket book. I am lucky that there is a Performance bike shop here in town so I can still do the LBS thing and go to Performance, and I Have found them to be one of the better shops in town. There are only a handfull of shops that I think are worth anything.

As far as comfort goes, well that is a personal matter, but if it fits well either bike should be comfortable.

Get the scattante. It's a nice bike. Since it's your first road bike, you'll absolutely love it and with the money you save you can afford to buy lots of shorts, jerseys, etc...

I rode one that belongs to a friend and it was very enjoyable. Great components, nice frame.

Don't waste a thousand dollars. You won't know the difference once you're on the road.
