Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Amgen makes EPO.

If you mention EPO to a pro cyclist, their eyes get as big as the average stiff being told that " Elisa Cuthbert wants to jump your bones and her hot friend wants in too!"

In the true political correctness that this country is all about these days, AMGEN is able to spin their product to the public about it "saving lives" without saying what it actually is that AMGEN produces...

Kind of reminds me of that comedian (can't remember who it was , but he is famous) who had fun with the R.A.D. campaign that MTV was shoving down our throats during the late 80's. He quipped, "Rock Against Drugs. Isn't that kind of like Christians Against Christ?"

The irony is a bit over the top. I'm somewhat astonished that Amgen thought the maker of the most widely abused substance in pro cycling would do such a thing. Hope it works for them.

okay, so I think its funny that the "united" team, supposedly a US national domestic team is sponsored by a japanese automaker. I find that kinda funny.

First off EPO was devloped to help cancer paitents, not to help a pro cyclist increase his performance.

The "United" team is sponsered by a small bicycle company and a large car manufacturer. Also consider Toyota is the thrid largest automaker in the USA and their cars largly out perform any POS that Detroit can think of building.

I am not too sure but I know that AMGEN makes a ton of money from EPO; however, majority of the people who are on EPO or Procrit are Kidney Patients not Cancer Patients...

I don't find this strange at all. EPO is a medical product. That people abuse it for other "benefits" is up to them - not Amgen's fault or responsibility.

I find Philip Morris' sponsorship of anti-smoking efforts far more ironic and extremely disingenuous.

Agreed.

And EPO was and is used to help cancer patients with their recovery...not just as a performance enhancing drug for cyclists.

Terrible analogy. EPO does serve an important and meaningful medical function for kidney dialysis patients, and chemotherapy patients. That's a fact not bullsh*t. Amgen has a legitimate interest in poromting the legitimate use of their product.

Besides, wasn't EPO developed as a clotting agent for hemopheliacs??

Plus get your priorities straight. What's more important? Helping a bunch of cancer patients or a pro's UCI ranking?

I actually don't find it funny at all. I lived in Thousand Oaks for years, Amgen's corporate headquarters, and they are huge supporters of cycling. They have a race team and huge club.

That didn't even come close to answering my question. My priorities? Well, thank god I'm not a kidney patient nor am I a UCI pro so I'm not sure if 'priorities' was the correct word to use. Why not sponsor an international consortium on Diabetes or a bowling tornament for that matter. Surely you Amgen supporters aren't trying to say that this was a coincidence are you? Why not get an anabloic steroid distributor to sponsor the world baseball classic? It would be the same thing.

^^^Amgen does sponsor a bunch of scientific stuff. With amounts of money that easily dwarf the Tour of California. All this really means is that some higher-ups in Amgen who have significant control over the discretionary sponsorship take an interest to cycling and/or see a good way to reach people and help grow their name recognition.

Alright, obviously some of you are a little optimistic about the capitalist business model. This is a serious question : Do you think Mcdonalds cares if people get fat from eating their food? Of course not, Mcdonalds job is not to be some sort of ethical watchdog, it's to make money for it's shareholders. Same with Amgen, they don't care whether their drugs get sold to a diabetes patient or to Tyler Hamilton - as long as it moves off of the shelves and they make money, they did their job. I think I'm arguing with people that always think the glass is half full..
