So who's riding the 2006 Montauk Century?
https://5bbc.org/montauk/
I hope to do a fast ride (fast for me, that is) from the earliest possible start at MSG / Penn Station to around the first 100-milers' rest stop, where I hope to catch-up to my better half who will do a late start at Babylon. The remaining 80-odd miles I will do in relative relaxation with her (not our first century together, BTW).
So who else is riding to Montauk this year?

i got an email saying that it's almost sold out. i still haven't decided yet. i kinda wanted to start from MSG, but it's kinda a pain to ride into manhattan at 4am only to turn around and ride back out again.

I have heard it is a great ride. Unfortunately my wife is due May 10th. I highly doubt she would let me go for the weekend this year that soon after. Maybe next year.

maybe i should just suck it up and do the 145 mile ride (plus 20 junk miles getting to and from penn station).

I'm in. Thinking of sucking it up & doing 145, but it's a little early in the 'season' for that. I'll most likely do the 100.

I'm signed up. Hope I'll be ready for 100 -- this thing always catches me by surprise so early in the year, it'd be a piece of cake in September. I'm prolly going to drive to Babylon early Sun. in the am.

There's a mailing list where the organizers solicit input and give out info. It's worth the extra few emails in the inbox, IMO. I'm lobbying for Krispy Kremes at the rest stops but apparently there's some technical difficulties involved: nobody at KK wants to get to work early enough to make the donuts for the ride.

Damn! I really had intentions on riding the event, but i doubt i will have enough saved up for a road bike to ride on, and i doubt i could do 100 miles comfortably on my track bike if i can't come up with the funds in time for a roadie. On top of that, by the time i decide im sure registation would be closed. Well, Im gunna try, hell, i guess i should just register now, and just hope ill make it out there.

I'm going for the 145--it'll be my longest ride ever. Only thing that sucks is that I'll have a 1+ hour subway ride into Manhattan from Queens.
Just a clarification--registration for the ride will not run out, but transportation back to NY will.

Timm, I'm riding the subway into manhattan from brooklyn, it's not too bad, you should do it.
I'm looking for a group to average about 22-24mph all the way there, who's up for it?

oboeguy: Are you going to ride your Dahon Speed Pro?
I don't think I can ride my road bike right now, but I hope I'm in shape by May. I'm 7 weeks into my recovery from collarbone surgery and I bought a Dahon Speed P8 '06 today. The riding was fine. It just pains me to lift the thing!
Do you guys think I'll survive riding a P8 for the 145? (Besides the fact that it'll take me forever)?

I'd like to do the 145, but am concerned about my conditioning (total and complete lack of) and the fact that the ride seems to be scheduled for a Sunday.
Sunday? I need to kick back after I kick ass!@!!

I've thought of taking the SpeedPro but I won't, because I need to do a very fast (for me) first 60+ miles to try to catch the wife near the first 100-milers' rest stop. I love my SpeedPro but it would be too slow compared to my roadbike. I think it could be done on the P8. Heck, I got dropped last year by a guy on a single-speed after 100 miles of riding together. :d
Slvoid, I do want to go fast, but not THAT fast. Well, maybe in a big group it would be OK.

I did the whole 145 from MSG to Montauk. All me and my buddy could think about the last 20 miles was how much our a**es hurt! One other problem we did not like: even though we started at the earliest possible time, we had a hard time keeping up with the closing times of the rest stops. Seems that nothing was left and we had literally 20 minutes to get our s*** together. And discovering that 40 miles between rest stops was way too far. Topping it all off, at Montauk, we got in so late, it was either eat or shower. We ate and stunk up the car on the way back. My advice is start no later than 5AM and average 18mph....

flipped you should get on the mailing list and let them know.
FYI I did NOT start right on time and was fine rest-stop-wise. I was riding with 1-3 other guys most of the time, though, so there was some work-sharing.

The event is more than two months away and you're impatient after three hours of no racers wanting to haul a55? You ARE in a hurry.

I agree w/ oboeguy. Krispy Kremes are a must at rest stops. I won't be riding the Montauk Century, but I'll eat some Krispy Kremes in your honor.

I'll be riding the 100, doing around 14mph, and eating at least 4 donuts.
