Back on the road today
Surprise, surprise.
I got a 23.1-mile ride in outside today. It was great to feel the wind in my face and hear the birds singing again. The four inches of snow from Monday morning is melting all around and the roads are very dirty, but mostly dry. So I took the the backup Trek 7500 FX off the trainer and gave an impromtu ride a shot. Man, is it nice to feel alive again!
It is an interesting transfer going from all this high rpm work on the trainer to the Real Road, if you will. What I did was try to keep that 100 rpm up in an easy gear. As soon as my Nike Triax HR monitor started to beep on the high end of the zone coach Jerry has set up for me (150 BPM) I would simply coast a little or gear down to an easier gear. Just keep the rpm up. I can see that my legs already took less of a beating. He's setting me up for longer distance/time spent in saddle by using this pedaling motion.
The thing that suffers is my speed. I only averaged 14 mph, but that's OK according to Jerry. I am still trying to keep that ave. speed number out of my head. It's NOT a training goal right now.
No Knave sighting today, which is unusual.
After the ride I hurried in to my LBS with all three of my bikes. The #1 road bike, my Campy Klein is getting outfitted with new carbon fiber Winwood handlebars....flat wide top and finger grips on the underside. I think it has a real nice feel. I'm also getting a new computer on that bike, one that will display cadence for me, which I do not have now.
Then the handlebar/computer setup from the original Klein will get placed onto the Trek 7500FX as my backup and trainer bike.

Sweet. I finally got a hint of nice weather (32 degrees out but nice compared to what its been) so I went out for a slow 2 miles just to stretch the legs out and get the feel again. I cant wait until it gets a little warmer! That 15 minutes was fun, even though the wind wanted to bite my face off. lol.
