Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

clothing help

I need to know what i need to get. I own 1 pair of bike shorts which are too big, so i know i need another pair.

what temperatures are long sleeve jerseys good for? short sleeve? When is it too cold to wear just shorts?

I dont have the money for this stuff, (I still gotta buy a helmet) but its gonna start being nice enough to ride outside soon, and i wanna be ready for the first nice day. Thanks in advance.

Its a little hard to answer because the temperature range can be very wide this time of year in the midwest (today it started in the upper 30's f. and now its 55 degrees f. ), not to mention this is purely subjective.

Shorts with long sleeves: 50 degrees f. - 65 degrees f.
Shorts with short sleeves: over 65 degrees f.
Long bibs with long sleeves: 40's
neoprene bibs with long thermal shirt, long sleeve, and jacket: 20 - 40 f.

Some things can change this like rain, wind, sun, clouds. I just own a wide range of clothing and guess at what I need. You kind of figure it out after awhile. I always carry an extra jacket just in case I missed.

You might want to go with something that’s flexible. I’ve gotten by with shorts, leg warmers, sportswool short sleeve jersey and arm warmers. Usually, I start out early in the morning when its cooler, but by the time I finish it can warm up significantly. When that happens I take off the leg warmers and arm warmers. That’s good for the mid 40’s to 60’s. If it feels any colder I throw on a jacket, full finger gloves, a cap and some heavy socks. However, much may depend on where you live. I live in FL so it doesn’t really get that cold.
