Holy Hamstrings Batman!

When I first started riding “on the hoods”, I rotated my handlebars up. It made the hoods more comfortable, but made riding in the drops less comfortable and I always felt that my hands were at the very end of the bars – never a very secure feeling. Consequently, almost all my riding is on the tops or the hoods. One obvious downside of this is that I'm not getting to the point where not riding in the drops results in extra work / air resistance.

So last night I decided to rotate the bars back down to a more traditional position where the bar ends are parallel to the ground. Presto, my comfort in the drops went way up, and I did a brisk hour ride today where I spent much more than half of it comfortably in the drops.

When I got off the bike, I was amazed at how worn out and even sore my hamstrings and glutes were compared to my quads. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that shifting from the tops / hoods to the drops would place different strains on my legs. I’d like to do a TT this summer, so I guess I have some catch-up training for the back of my legs.

Anyway, it all goes to show you how important fit is, and how what was good last year may need to be reassessed this year.

Why not leave the bars level, or parallel to the ground as you said, and raise the position of the shifters? You would have to unwrap the bars to that point, or even replace the tape entirely, but the whole job should only take about 15-20 minutes. When I replaced my handlebars a few months ago, I made sure to keep the shifters towards the high side before securing and taping. This seems to work well for me as I am a short guy, but have some flexibility. Now, when you are in the drops, your reach to the shifters will be off, but you could fix that with some shims if necessary.

When I started riding, I was out of shape and really uncomfortable on the hoods. I rotated the bars up initially because I needed a quick fix. I'm in a lot better shape now, so I'm fine with the shifters where they are now.

One rule of thumb that I've read about is that the drops should point at the rear brakes

I always heard they should point at the rear axle.

The only "rule" there is says to point them wherever the rider feels comfortable. If that be at the brake, at the axle, level to the ground, hell, even pointing up to the saddle, so be it.

It depends on the bars. Most modern bars are made with the intention of having the ends pointing at the rear brakes. This is kind of stupid, because it leaves you no good position for sprinting. Older bars (like my modolo) have the ends pointing a little above the axle, which leaves you with a nice hood area, a very deep, aero position for descents, and a nice, wide, well-angled perch for sprinting.
