Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stem:

I have a question to everybody out There? This is more of a looks question. I currently am riding 110mm +/-6 Deg WCS stem. This is a great Stem. I am using the - 6 because I like the look, but the truth is the +6 is more comfy. This is a factory cut fork, and I Do not have room for any more shims. Here is the Question does anybody know of a manufacture that make -5 or a -4,-3 Deg 110mm stem? I think the -4 would give it +2 deg and -3 would give me a +3 deg rise with the slope of steering tube, without giving the bike the look of comfort bike. I would love to find a -3 deg stem. Does this exist? I have a 4.5" seat rise from the top of the bar. I would like to get this too 3.5". The frame fits fine the top of the seat is less than 8" from top tube. Just wished manufacture would have left room for one more spacer on the fork. Help Please????

if you wanty your bars an inch higher, you'll need a 0 degree stem or maybe just flipping your -6.

It really shouldnt matter what it looks like so long as your cmfy and the bike fits you. If your uncomfortable you may be less likely to ride.

I just added a 15deg Salsa stem and FSA wing bars to my bike for fit/comfort reasons. Im more likely to ride longer now.

If you are afraid of people judging you by your stem, just compensate by either adding carbon, or the word "campagnolo" somewhere on your bike (the bigger the logo the better). I hear that they now make carbon waterbottle cages. Pre-tty sharp!

WOW,

a REAL poseur.

Why not just get a new fork with a longer steerer?

Salsa makes a stem in either AL or Scandium that has 0° rise. I think the Syntace F99 might be 5° but I am not sure there.

Wow, Poseur?? Who are you, and what gives you ("Mr. Biking God") the right to call anybody a poseur. I have raced BMX and MTB combined for over twenty years, I have had my faire share of road bikes over the years as well. I just asked a question? I really asked the question, because +6deg gives me a +12 deg in stem rise, + 12 deg also takes from the 110mm length. A) I do not need 12% incline in my stem and B) I need to get closer to 110mm to adjust my torso correctly while on the bike. -6 Deg gives me 0 Deg rise, and the full 110mm Length, but is a little low for where saddle needs to be. "Patriot" If you know so dammed much; how do you get in between the two? A new fork is costly way to fix a stem problem on a new bike? (That is all I am asking? I could get 130MM stem with a + 6 deg, that might give me a 110mm Length that I need, Place the stem under spacers against head set and that might get the height required for fit!

Thanks grasschopper, I will check these stems out!

I think the closest you'll get from either a +/- 5 or 6 degree stem is to get a 90 degree stem. I just installed a Salsa Pro Scandium 90 degree stem on my bike. It's just the right amount of rise I needed and it looks good aesthetically.

Perhaps this chart might be helpful in determining the exact rise and reach:

That picture is helpful. What's also helpful is knowing a little trigonometry. A mechanical engineer (and cyclist) friend gave me the following formula for calculating rise for stems of various lengths and angles.

Rise = sin(angle) * stem length

For example, my head tube angle is 73 degrees (per manufacturer's website), and the stock stem is parallel to the ground. Therefore, I know that the stem is a -17 degree angle. I too wanted a zero degree stem, and I also wanted to know how much rise that would give me. The difference between a zero degree stem and a -17 degree stem is obviously 17 degrees. I also have a 110 mm stem.

Rise = sin(17) * 110
Rise = 32.16 mm

If you want to gain an inch of rise (which your post suggests), you can simply plug that into the formula and determine how many additional degrees of rise you will need. 1 inch = 2.54 cm.

Using the formula, you would need to increase your stem angle about 13 degrees to get to nearly 1 inch of rise:

24.74 mm = sin(13) * 110

By the way shawnj73, it's not the ''poser'' you're thinking of. When it's spelled with a ''u,'' as in ''poseur,'' (sounds French, doesn't it?) it means you are very anal about your bike's looks, borderline obsessive-compulsive-like. It's pretty much a compliment.

I knew that he spelt poseur, different than I spelt poser, but just thought it meant the same thing. Oh well, sorry Patriot if this is the case.

Eyestrain posted some of the most useful information last night. I am going down to try and a few stems at LBS today. Grasschopper also posted a lot of good information. Thanks!!

Thanks all.
