Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It might work, but most probably you will have to shim the bar. Make a shim out of an old Coke can.

But won't that wont be looked down upon by the OCP police? Not that that matters, what with my new (to me) Shimano 600 sti group and all. I was thinking about shimming it with a pop can but I need reassurance.

Hi,
The CYA answere is, NO, you will surely die if you do that.
The real answer is maybe. The tolerances on these components are not always that tight, and if the bar fits snug and tightens down it should be okay. If there is any slop, you should shim the bars.

CYA myself it's not recommended, but in reality I shimmed bars with soda can pieces without a problem. It's preferable to get the right size stem/bar though, because making a shim can be finicky.

Is the 26.4 measurement "pre-clamped"? 'Cuz the stem has to be able to be tighten down to something---like a 26.0 bar. Otherwise, you'd never get a 26.0 bar through a 26.0 hole without a really big hammer.

(Unless we are talking about pre-1998 Cinelli handlebars...they were really 26.4)
