Which set of Bomb-proof Rims and Tires?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which set of Bomb-proof Rims and Tires?

I want to get a set of indestructable rims built for my Felt F55. American Classic 420's are great, but I need something to throw on when I want to kick ass on the streets of New York City.

Weight is not a factor, but I would be riding long distances with them. I am looking for as many recommendations, suggestions, and comments as possible.

Which brand/model rims do recommend?

What spoke count?

What is the max tire size?

What are some of the toughest tires?

Thanks!!

Velocity Aeroheads for rims, perhaps?

Laced to 32 hole Shimano 105 hubs with 32 DT butted spokes of some kind?

Yeah -- that's what i'm talking about, those would definitely be a good option to look more into... they look great on this fixed gear.

I use arrowheads on 36/36 hole 105 hubs. I say get 36 at least on the back if you can.

Mavic CXP33 rims, 32 hole, with 32 DT 14 gauge spokes in a 3-cross pattern front and rear, using your choice of hubs (105, ultegra, dura ace) or any other non-weight-weenie hubs. Should come in around 1950g front and rear, it will be nearly indestructable and suitable for commuting on even the roughest roads. I'd use the same wheelset if I were building a budget cyclocross bike for use with 700x32 knobby tires too.

A very nice suggestion, the Mavic CXP33's are great looking rims, and definitely an option. That's all extremely solid advise, thanks bro.

and affordable - I have the set I described above, but with the mavic CXP22 rims and 105 hubs. The CXP22 is a slightly heavier (20 grams more) less expensive version of the 33. My set cost $145 + 20 shipping, sadly no longer available from the online shop I bought it from...

You might want to consider some of the crop of 29" MTB rims out there such as the Sun-Ringle Rhyno Lite in 622mm/29" size. They're going to be pretty bombproof.

You're a sick man for suggestion that!
https://twentynineinches.com/

Even if they fit inside my fork, I don't think my toe would clear it. 29" Rims are sick, but I think the bike needs to be designed for them. I like the way you're thinking though!!

29" is the same as 700C. They should fit in your fork. The 622mm/29" version of the Rhyno Lites are actually listed as road rims.

A couple of more options for you. I ride the Salsa DelgadoX on my commuter, it is also a 29er/700c cyclocross rim design...very strong and comes in 32 or 36 spoke versions. Mine are laced 3x to 105 hubs and I haven't touched them in a year.

Also think about a deeper section rim like the Valocity Deep V and the DT Swiss RR1.2. A Deep V with 32 or 36 spokes will be nuke proof.

I am looking to build up a similar wheelset for urban pothole dodging and curb jumping in Philly, and have posted some here and done some of my own research. I originally wanted to go with the Salsa delgado rim but the rim is 22.5 mm wide so using my normal 700 x 23 tires would be a problem. I guess you would have to use atleast a 25 mm wide tire or a 28mm but my frame will not have enough clearance for a 28 (a Ritchey Road Logic) and I doubt that yours will either since it is a modern road racing design. This will hold true for pretty much all of the 29er rims and cyclocross rims. So that leaves the Velocity, CXP, and DT rims. From what I have found, it looks like we will have to either build the wheelset ourselves or get them made at an LBS or custom hand made at an online BS. I haven't built mine yet, but I think my selection will be as follows:
Ultegra/Dura-Ace/105 hubs just depending on what kind of a deal I can get laced 3X with 36 butted spokes to either the Velocity Deep V or Mavic CXP33 rim with regular road tires (some old Tioga Gum Rubber Tires which I can not find a replacement for but love the looks). So all I really know is 36 spokes and 3X.
Good luck and update me on your selection and how they hold up when you get your set.

Arrowheads are listed as 24mm wide https://www.speedgoat.com/product.asp...=260&brand=272
What tires do you use? Have you ever tried using a tire in 23mm width?

Yes. It's true that you will require at least a 28mm tyre for the Rhyno Lites and even that would be pushing it.

this list has links to pretty much every rim manufacturer, and most companies
make a model that is deep and tough. Some say that Mavic CXP33s are tough, but I've crakced 2 of them without too much effort.

Technically they are 19mm wide on the inside and I use 23mm no problem. In fact, arrowheads are made for strictly road tires.

The Deep V or fusion would be stronger still. The DT RR 1.2 would be another option if it is available (not sure if it is out yet?)

I say get 36 spokes on the rear because 1 oz more weight won't make an performance but It makes the rear wheel stronger. 95% of any problems you have will be at rear wheel. The front just doesn't seem to get any stress.

a pair of Mavic Open 4 CDs w/ultegra hubs.

these are my training wheels, and i've had 'em since '93, when i was living in the big apple. back then i had 23 mm michelin comps on them, these days it's a pair of 23 mm michelin speediums.

btw, IMO apart from the occasional gaping manhole, NYC roads are no worse, and in many cases better, than roads in the 'burbs.

+1 for Open Pros/Ultegra hubs. I'm a big guy, riding aggressively on these streets (and how much worse have they become!? especially in Brooklyn) and they've held up admirably for a long while.

As far as tires, I've had 23c Rubino's and now Micheline Pro racers on both my bikes. I don't flatten enough to consider wider tires a necessity.

somebody on the fixie forums (thank you aeroplane) told me he was using two sets of Salsa Delgado X rims, one with a 23c and one with a 25c, both with no problems. According to the weightweinies atleast, spending an extra 40 bucks on Velocity Arrowhead could save me half a lb. though. Plus the whole aero thing. decisions decisions...

Isn't the standard answer to this question Mavic Open Pros with Ultegra hubs and 32 spoke count and Michelin Carbons or Gatorskins?

Open Pros aren't that strong. They are OK.

Actually arrowheads are on the light side too, but if you have 36 spokes plus the OCR rear its strong enough.

+1 on the 33's, they are really tough, strong wheels. I've run over some pretty nasty stuff and they stay true.
