Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommend some cool-looking helmets other than Bell or Giro?

Looking for a sleek non-mushroom helmet outside of the Big Two, Bell and Giro.

Suggestions?

That would be the big one. Giro is owned by Bell.

Go to your LBS, select some helmets, close your eyes and try them on. Buy the one that fits the best. Peel off the decals if brand is an issue, or go to your guitar store and get some Gibson decals or some such and cover up the brand.

Another alternative if you have the cash is to send your helmet to Troy Lee Designs where for about four times the cost of the original helmet you can have some *****'en-cool graphics.

Do you notice if the net increases or produces extra wind noise?

Not really though considering my first ride with it was a very windy day. Did notice it to be a little warmer the my Bell Sweep (like AC left on when the temp drops) but that was a good thing on that ride.

OK I'll bite. What does a "mushroom helmet" look like?

OH yeah I'll beat you to it. Don't say like a mushroom!

I can't believe no one has suggested the Specialized Decibel yet. It is a bit pricey but it is a great helmet...awesome airflow and a good retension system. Tons of colors too. Oh and it comes with a removable visor as well...Gerolsteiner, Cofidis, Lotto, Milram, Liberty Suguros, Domina and others all wear this helmet if that sort of thing matters to you.

you're right.

after an initial experiment with Giro that didn't really work, a model circa 1990, like Greg Lemond wore
i switched to specialized because they fit better.

I loved them, and even better, my team at the time was sponsored by them, so we got those great sub6 (i think that's what they were called) helmets.

anyway - went back to giro, which seems to fit better than specialized these days.

it had seemed that specialized had all but disappeared from the pro peloton for a few years, and only just recently had i noticed more teams wearing them. after seeing your scans, i see that they're making a big push this season.

Yea last year I think they started back into the road scene for real...the Decibel is only a year or two old but is just a great helmet...I have the Specialized MTB team colors version from 05...23 big air flowing vents and the black area is actually a CF weave with clearcoat. I didn't pay nearly retail for mine so it made it reasonable. I am thinking of getting the Milram version as the red and black goes with none of my clothes...it will be my commuter helmet. I also have a Giro Pneumo which for the given size (Med in both) fits just a touch smaller and my wife has sort of stolen it.

Does anyone know where Catlike helmets can be ordered online? I know they can't be purchased in the US, and there are usually only one or two on ebay at any given time. I really want to give their helmets a try.
