It Ate My Tire!

Just 25 miles on the trainer! It was raining last night in DC so I dragged out the trainer to watch TV while putting on some base miles. There's a cm wide flat spot right down the center now. 80 miles on new tires, no wear ... 25 miles on the trainer, looks like I rode 2500.

And cleaning up ... took almost as long as the 25 miles! Rubber crumbs everywhere, haven't had that many on the bike / floor / carpet / countertop (!) since trig in HS.

Hutchinson Fusion Comps, great for racing, bad bad bad for training. At least the trainer's back in the closet until November. I can buy a an actual trainer tire then... /rant

Road racing tires are not designed for use on a trainer. The rubber is too soft and heats up.
If you switch to the Conti trainer tire, it will basically last forever, but cannot be used on the road.

I always use a worn tire on the trainer. Make sure the tension against the tire wasn't too much, but also if it's too loose and the tire slips against the resistance unit it can wear just as bad.

Rollers are what you need. www.sportcrafters.com.

Properly adjusted, your tire will take material off the roller. My tire always ends up looking metallic after a few weeks of training. I've had a few flats indoors, but never worn a tire out there. I recently 'upgraded' from an ancient wind resistance trainer to a similarly ancient twin-axled wind resistance trainer. Close examination revealed that my tires, over the years, have worn a groove in the original trainer's drive roller!

I use Conti 3000's that have about 1,500 miles on them I save for my Fluid2...ride 90 or so minutes a day in winter on the trainer and have only switched a tire once this year...very little rubber on the mat under the bike.
What trainer are you using? The "Paris-Roubaix" model? ;)

+1 on this, or switch over to rollers as was also mentioned. Here is the link for the trainer tire: http://www.conti-online.com/generato...rainer_en.html. Generally, around $30, and most LBS have or can get for you quickly.
