Shimano 105 Pedals?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano 105 Pedals?

Does anyone here have or have used the entry-level Shimano SPD-SL 105 pedal? How do they compare to Ultegra/DA pedals?

Also, how do they compare to the Time RXS (expensive cleats!) and the basic Look pedals (forgot the model name)?

I cannot give you any assistance with a comparison, but I thought I read recently that Shimano has or is planning to replace their 105 level pedal with a new model. For example, see this page for what I mean: https://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?...arrivals/03-30. If this is the case, you may be asking for comparison with an older version of that pedal, unless you are specifically targeting a prior model year (and perhaps finding a good discount!).

Take care,
T

I have a set of the 105's on my commuter bike and a set of ultegra's on my road bike. I can't tell the difference between them when I'm riding. The article you posted said they are heavier and the bearings aren't as good. I can tell the difference between bearings on the D/A and Utegra but not between the 105/Ultegra. These pedals aren't flashy but very functional.

The 105/ ultegra have the exact same spindle bearing assembly they both use 62 3/32nds steel ball bearings the only difference is the material of the pedal body.

The PD-R540 has been on the shimano website for over a year, but it wasn't part of any one group... they've now decided to make it part of the 105 set. The successor to the WH-R550 wheelset has also been put in the 105 group for marketing purposes.

It looks like a good pedal, if you are considering the 540, I think there is a Look KEO model in the same price range to compare it with ($75).

That's what I thought by looking at them. For the money, the 105 pedal is great deal.

My understanding is that Shimano paid Look to use the same system the Looks just have more features on them generally. I ride with the entry level SPD-SL and like them. The cost difference between them and Ultegra is outrageous for the weight savings. The only problem I had was this loud clicking sound everytime I got out of the saddle when I first got them. It took the shop a while to figure out where the sound was coming from. They just relubed them and they've been fine ever since. If you're a weight weenie or you care about them being black they're a much better value.

My Ultegra pedals made that clicking sound at first. I was going to take it in the the LBS to look at the bearings but it stopped and never happened again.

yeah 105 is a good deal for the money. probikekit has them for $35 right now. when I bought my pedals back in december they had the Keo Carbon cro mo axle for $109 that was too good a deal to pass up the look KEO is a nice pedal they use 2 cartridge bearings and a flat roller bearing similar to the Dura Ace except the Dura Ace uses Ball bearings and a roller bearing and the body is painted aluminum alloy.

I've got about 1200 miles on mine (same ones posted in the link above...been on the market for a while now). This is the first pair of clipless I have owned, so I can't compare them to anything either. I like them, but will probably replace them with speedplays in a couple of hundred more miles (want to replace around 2000 miles).
