The Truth Behind Shaving Your Legs...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Truth Behind Shaving Your Legs...

I do it because it looks sexy. Nothing better than cruising by some young girls, your tan legs muscles taut and rippling under the sun, glistening with sweat. Oh yeah.

Come on...The avoidance of infection? Gimme a break.

If that is why you ride then catdaddy you are way off base! I don't shave because it is a daily pain unless you laser and that will cost some mega bucks. I use to shave in my weight lifting days and it was just a hassle. If I rode pro I would laser and be fine with it.

Come on, let's be fair, there's at least one other legitimate reason: "the other guys in my club/team were hassling me about having hairy legs and I was not really sure if they were serious about 'shaving' 2 seconds off of a 40-minute TT time and I figured 'couldn't hurt' so one night sitting in the tub all by myself I spied my wife's shaving foam and razor and 30 minutes later I had shaved legs". Or something like that.

Random girl in bar: Hi, I'm Random Girl.

Cypress: How are you RG?

RG: I'm great. Hey wow, do you shave your arms and legs?

Cypress: Why, yes I do RG.

RG: Why?

Cypress: Well RG, I am a cyclist and..(the story goes on)....

RG: Oh, well I have to meet my friends somewhere. See ya!

RG walks over to football players and eventually goes home with the ugly one later that night.

Shaving is good for more things than infection prevention.

I find that when I crash, I hurt my arms just as much as my legs. (ex MTB racer)

I'm also a pretty hairy guy, so if I ignore my arms my upper half resembles a hand knit sweater.

exactly!!

Pros shave coz it makes massaging and the treatment of road-rash much easier, but they get massages almost daily, and hit the ground semi-regularly -- how often to the rest of crash or get massages?

I shaved my legs for one season. Got to be a pain in the ass having to shave every day, so I stopped.

I don't know Cypress... It looks like your shaving might have prevented an infection you have to explain to your spouse latter.

So thats why RG don't talk to me, I don't shave my legs! It all makes perfect sense now.

I was starting to wonder if shaving my chest would help keep me cool in the upcoming Summer... and my fiancee would like me to anyway. The problem is deciding where to stop. No matter where I stop shaving, it will make a noticeable line from wooly to silky.

And I thought pro riders would stop shaving their arms once they started wearing those long sleeve, rubber skinsuits for time trials.

I tried the chest thing. It didn't keep me cool enough to justify being terrified of goosebumps.

Not worth the trouble. My S.O. hated the shorn chest. If it wasn't kept clean all of the time she said it was like "cuddling with a cactus".

The arms are a habit from the mountain racing days.

Question for you guys who shave your legs. Do you wear shorts as casual wear when your off the bike?

I wear shorts all the time in summer and if I had shaved legs without a bike in sight people might get the wrong idea!

Regards, Anthony

Stubble and all. This is the first season with the shave and I'm getting used to it. Never have been too self conscious though - I shave my head too, and have always had the questions about that one.

I wear shorts all through summer, and quite often forget about it 'till someone says "ooh, do you shave your legs?" but I don't think anyone's gotten the wrong idea.
I'd get more crap from the guys I race with if I didn't

at 15 years old i think its too early to shave my legs, especially at school when the guys see, but on the other hands the ladies will stroke their hands down my smooth, hairless, defined, strong, tan legs. They will go wild. so it can be good and bad. Although i have blonde hair to begin with and not much so shaving might not be a bad idea. How do you shave legs? DO you go up to your thigh or just calves? thanks
