Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Bicycle carrier case?

Anyone got an opinion on a good bicycle carrier/case? Like the Xport from Performance and I believe Nashbar has one also. You know, the big plastic cases for transporting bikes via airlines etc..... Thanks, Marc

Cardboard box.

Inexpensive, easily disposed of when you arrive at your destination, and relatively durable.

After that, I'd have to say the Trico is marginally better than the Serfas. Those are the only two hardshell cases I've used, so they are the only two I can comment on.

The best but also most expensive case I've seen are the Sci-Con Aerotech cases. The sticker on these things run around US$750 MSRP though.

Sci-Con also makes less expensive cases however.

You might also want to look into the Tri All 3 Sports case. They run about US$450.

The Freight baggage case is really nice. A guy in SF makes them and they cost around $300 or so. Its a 'soft shell' case, which mean that is made from a tough fabric but it has plastic sheets to keep its shape and protect the bike. The downside is that you have to strip off the handlebars, fork, cranks, wheels and saddle, but that only took me about 10mins to do and another 5 to pack it all up. It's light and its under the airline's size limit so when I used it they didn't even bat an eye to the case or ask about it.
