Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommendations for a purely road use SPD shoe?

New pedals - Shimano PD-M540's - came with another set of cleats. I'm currently using a pair of Nike Kato III. No problems with Katos other than they're getting a bit rough around the edges from wear.

The new shoe would not need to be "office or church communion rail kneeling compatible."

I'm looking for light weight and stiff sole primarily.

I'm not considering the SPD sandal at this time - I've never been able to comfortably wear walking sandals - blisters on sides of toes.

Never mind, found some Sidi possibilites for nice stiff shoes including an SPD adapter for road shoes - that would, though, defeat the purpose of staying SPD - being able to COMFORTABLY walk around.

Shimano make a pair of shoes aimed at touring which are SPD walkable but look more like road shoes. Normal SPD compatible fitness/mtn shoes will be fine as well.

I have a pair of the Shimano SH-TO92 Sport Touring Shoes. They're easly to walk on as the cleats are recessed. The sole is fairly hard but not as hard as $200+ shoes. See https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...egory_ID=2010#

I recently got a new pair of SPD shoes for use with my road bike (I use Time ATAC's). I was looking for a stiff soled performance shoe, not too heavy, walkable (not hikable) and SPD compatable. I choose Time MXS cyclecross carbon shoes. The catalogue says they weigh 800 grams (size 42), mine weigh 1000 grams size 44 with cleats. I've only used them a few times and I'm happy with them. They are not totally stiff, have a tiny bit of flex. No hot spots from a 3 hr. non-stop ride on Sunday.

All the OLD shimano shoes where spd, spd-r and spd sl compatible, can probably find a great deal on ebay if you look around there

Road-specific cycling shoes will all pose walkability problems. Since you're already committed to SPD-type cleats, your best choice would be to look towards XC racing MTB shoes. These are typically as stiff as road shoes but have enough tread to keep the cleats recessed and allow for easier walking. Sidi and Lake are my favourite brands but there are many others. Try as many as you can because fit is important.

You should compare the weight of those shoes + the adapter to Sidi mountain bike shoes, which are easier to walk in.

Yep, I suggest you get a good pair of Sidi mtb shoes. I have mtb shoes for similar SPD pedals and am doing fine. The weight difference was so minimal, I don't even notice it. But I love being able to walk into my house with tiled floor without removing my cycling shoes first.

I personally have used the Sidi SPD adapters with my Sidi road shoes and can tell you that it's a suboptimal solution. It's heavy, makes the shoes even slicker (walking is even more of challenge), flexes quite a bit and increases the stack height. It also makes it harder to engage your cleats with the pedals.
