Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Look HSC 5SL fork for Specialized Tarmac S-WORKS?

I'm contemplating swapping out my current Spesh S-WORKS fork for a Look HSC 5SL fork. I noticed that the rake on the look is 43mm vs a 45 on the Spesh. Does anybody know if there might be and +/-ve effects that might arise from a 2mm rake gap? Any advice would be useful!

rake is way overrated compared to material and design differences, especially when it's 2mm, and extra ESPECIALLY when the forks are carbon, because of the variations of carbon lamination. The LOOK fork will most likely feel different, but it will due the fact that it's a way different fork to the S-Works

Thanks a bunch !!!! I can only assume that the fork will obviously feel different as the Zertz dampening systerm will most definitely provide some kind of change in comfort. At 340gm vs 295gm on the look, I'm wondering if its a wise investment to dosh out big money on something that might not make a huge difference. I'm also hearing that the Spesh fork is may be noticeably stiffer than the HSC 5SL but once again, to lash out several hundreds on something that might not be worth it makes me think twice about it

yeah...tough decision when the cost starts to creap up. Good forks do make a difference, but you obviously can tell until you've ridden it.

Have you looked at other brands? Any reason you've settled on the Look?

Links to nearly all the manufactures are on this Weight Weenies list.

The Columbus Carve is pretty good value

Indeed, so many choices combined w/ a HUGE range of prices are making my decision difficult. The reason I sought to go w/ the 5SL was because I was able to come across a used one for $200. Would this make the fork a steel?

If it were me, I probably wouldn't replace it. Matches the bike perfectly!

The difference in trail won't be detectable on the finest instruments unless the Specialized geometry is right on the edge already - and it isn't.
