Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Make me wear a helmet!

So I want to wear a helmet, just not one that weighs a great deal or protrudes far from my noggin. So, without turning this into a helmet debate, or even a thickness versus effectiveness debate, can anyone recommend a 'thin' helmet?

Most sites list helmet weights. Most likely you won't feel any helmet that weighs less than 300g or so, which is most of the helmets that are sold today.

Without a helmet, you're an accident waiting to happen.

Just find one and wear it.

God this place is full of idiots.

As a matter of interest, why is thickness a criteria?

If its a question of aesthetics then just try a few and see which one looks best. The giro pneumo & atmos are okay looking if you've got a small head and don't want to look like this:

I use a Gyro Transfer. Entry level but only weighst 280g and its a very small profile.

That is the main reason that I picked it. =)

I have the red/white/blue one... I got it for around $ 30 at the lbs. It is the 2005 model, I don't think that exact color is available in the 2006 line-up ... =)

Funny picture. What's it from?

Or.....if you really wanna be cool....wear the Cinelli hair net helmet. Not legal here in the U.S., but who cares..?

Alas, race legal is required. And I'm not really cool enough to sport the hair net - perhaps I should start with aquanet, and work my way up?

I wear that Giro helmet Team Discovery wears. Whatever that model is called. Pricey I suppose, but light and supremely comfortable. Looks good too. As good as a helmet possibly can. And I've had it save my noggin twice in the past year. That helmet has been replaced with a fresh one from Giro on their helmet replacement program.

In other words you want to wear a helmet in your mind only.

Somehow I don't believe your aesthetics statement. What on earth does "I'd like my head to be as small as possible in case of accident" mean? Do smaller heads suffer less injury? Sounds like vanity to me. By the way, vanity is not a crime. I don't know any cyclists who aren't worried about how something of their's looks.

Just go buy something for god sakes. It's not that big a deal. It's not like you'll be the only one wearing a helmet.

Yes. More cantilevered weight off of your neck has a greater chance of causing neck injury. It also means that your head is more likely to hit the ground in the first place; as the stiffness/strength of your neck has to support more weight.

More volume means that you're more likely to allow your head to hit the pavement.

Really? I said that aethestics was a part of my decision. You disagree?

Everyone: I'm buying a helmet. You should be happy, right? I'm just try to do so in a semi-informed manner.

Giro Atmos. All the OCP wear them. They are light, well-vented, have some carbon for that all-important 'Bling!' factor, and expensive.

What more could you ask for?

Team Rabobank colors.

Yes, I wear one. Orange and Blue to go with my Orbea.

Just get one that pro teams wear, Atmos is a good choice $139 at Nashbar. Then if somebody says you look like you have a large head you can say that (insert bad@ss biker here) wears one and they won't have any comeback. The only problem with this is that the person who will comment on your large noggin is some obese person who hasn't worked out since P.E in high school, they will obviously not know who this biker is or even know that professional cycling exists. This is the only piece of my equipment that I thought "The pros wear it so it must be the best choice for me", even though it was way over my budget. The good thing is that I now where my helmet everytime that I go out, even on campus.

The more the helmet costs the denser (aka thinner) the foam will be.

So, spend $200 and shut up

Ahh, I found it. Bell Razor Pro, the offspring of the Bell Razor which I really really wanted when I was a junior racer (lightweight, REALLY thin, and so cool everybody was wearing one). My parents wouldn't let me buy one because it was so thin, and it was more expensive than other helmets at the time. Not a bad price now at $80.

I'm not sure if that website is still running, because all of the helmets listed are ones I remember from when I was racing (mid 90s), but that Razor was the thinnest helmet I ever saw if they're still selling it.
