Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For some reason that looks like a 5000/5200 frame. Don't the Madones have a flared out top tube and the "sharkfin" on the seat tube?

That's what I was thinking, not that it had to have a sharkfin, but the seatstay is different for sure. But I'm new, so I wasn't completely sure.

last year at least, the Madone's had the funky tubing with the sharkfin while the Madone SLs had the more traditional tubing.

the 5200 is the exact same as the madone 5.2. same group set, same wheels, bars, stem, etc....

in 2005, they renamed the 5200 to the madone 5.2

Looks like a Madone 5.2 SL to me (no shark fin). SL is the high end 5.2 - light, stiff, fast! Hot bike! Like someone else said, I have to be satisfied with my 5200, but I sure do admire your bike.

Enjoy!

According to Trek's website, there's no Madone SL in 04, and the 05 has the tapered top tube.

I hate to say it, but to me it looks like a 5000 series OCLV.

Edit: I think you're right about the 04 5200. Here's a pic of one:

I'm not going to post a picture of my 5.9.
Aside from a new saddle, it doesn't look any different than the catalog. And I don't take pictures of my bikes, anyway.

But I have to say that it is a marked difference from my $3000 Salsa Campeon.
The 5.9 handles as if it already knows the route.

There'll be no flippin' flipping. I did expect comments. As you might have noticed, not only is is "flipped" but it is also EXTENDED. Neck problems and not appearance dictate the setup. I've got a custom steel with extended QUILL stem, too.

completley untrue--the madone 5.2SL is made of OCLV 110. The 5200 was made using OCLV 120. The madone, while some are made from the same material, are a different bike. Its not the same as the 5200. The 5.2 replaced the 5200 (i think they just reintroduced the 5200 this year after scrapping it for a bit), but thats not the same as saying they're identical.

Here's how you can tell your bike is a 5200.

1) Look at trek's website. Go to the archives and look at the 5200 from 2004. The bike that shows up is in nude carbon, but you can click on "nude pearl/baja blue" and TA-DA! Thats your bike! Its the exact same bike as your picture. The only way your bike is not a 04 5200 is if you had it repainted. And no, trek doesnt recycle colors.

2) Your bike is an OCLV 120 without a fin. The madone SL series are the only madones without a fin. However, they are made of OCLV 110. Thus, either your OCLV 120 sticker is a lie or you have a 5200.

3) Your bike is the same bike lance rode in the final stage of the tour de france in 2003. [you can find a pic anywhere on the web] 2003 was the first year of the madone and at that time, it was just the 5.9 WITH FIN. Other than that the 5.9, it was just the 5900 and 5200. lance's bike on that stage is your exact bike (plus DA, which made it a 5500) and is finless--so unless he was riding the prototype of a 5.2SL, which wasnt introduced until two years later in 05, id say you both are riding 5200's.

Face it--your bike is a 5200. Take it to a dealer and ask him if you dont believe me.

that is not even a Madone 5.2..... 5.2 has fairings... and 5.2SL is made from OCLV 110 - and your frame says 120.

the seatstay is not a A-frame... the top tube is just a regular rounded tube... you got duped.
