Expensive bikes and Zip Ties...

I was browsing through some pics on cyclingnews.com of the new Specialized S-Works Roubaix bike and was once again struck by something that occasionally hits me when I look at pictures of really nice, expensive bikes.

Ziptied computer sensors.

I've always kinda wondered why bike/ fork/ computer manufacturers don't come up with a more elegent way of mounting or integrating the sensor for a computer in the fork. If you think about it, the whole bike is often designed to be smooth and flowing from wheel to wheel. Some manufacturers even to to lenghts to route cables in an asthetically pleasing fashion, and yet there it sits, zip tied to the front fort. The ugly blob of a computer sensor. I wonder if fork manufacturers could agree on an ISO type of sensor mount that they could put on the fork, perhaps a small threaded boss similar to a canti brake mount that you could then attach the sensor to.

I dunno, it's mostly just rambling, but something that always kind of caught my eye, especially on expensive high end bikes.

it's function over form, a rarity in the bike industry.

Mavic has a cool wireless setup where the front skewer is actually the speed pickup.

Every fork model is different. It's the easiest way to mount everywhere.

Get a garmin....no sensor.

Lightweights have a tiny magnet integrated into the front hub's side wall, another bonus of owning a $3600 wheelset.

Ziptied computer sensors.

Tell me about it. I don't necessarily have a to-die-for bike, but I am none too pleased with how my Cateye cd3000's computer sensor (which incidentally is just a bit smaller than the state of Florida) mounts, like a hippo humping a log, on my rear chainstay.

Since my bike is clearcoated aluminum with no paint, the zipties are plainly evident in all their cheapa$$ glory.

Have you tried double sided tape? Try your local glass/window shop.

I agree, the zip ties suck. but it does work. it would be great if a computer manuf. got together with a fork manuf. and agree on a standard and develop an intergated mounting system...the time is past due.
