Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What to eat before a race?

Racing on Saturday and I am not sure what exactly is best to eat the day before and the morning of the race. Also, how many bottles of fluids should a rider have for a two hour race (hilly) and should I bring something to eat during the race (or is the distance too short).

Thanks,

J

Little chocolate donuts

Just don't eat anything that you don't normally have. Drink enough to pee clear and stop drinking 60 minutes before your start time. Potatoes are good the day before as is pasta.

Can you get the weak at Trader Joe's? Are they free-range, organic weak?

Well it really varies from person to person but here is my pre-race diet ritual:

Breakfast: (about 2-3 hours before the race) Oatmeal with soy milk honey and apple

First snack about 1 hour before event. Powerbar 20oz of eload (or whatever your on bike drink is)

Start warm up about 45min before race drink 1-2 more 20oz bottles of eload.

During the race it depends on the distance and type but I generally will consume 1 20oz bottles of eload and 20oz bottle of water and one Enervitine cheer pack.

After race 1 20oz bottle of emend (recovery drink) and an apple and a powerbar.

But I wouldn't vary too much from your normal routine on a race day. If you are going to eat differently than normal do it on a day you aren't racing. If it upsets your stomach then it won't matter.

A couple tacos followed by a few beers and a Manhattan?

That is what my last pre-race night was like. I wouldn't say it was a good idea though.

here's some good pre-race meal info from the guys at hammergel

in short, take in calories three hours before an event so that blood won't be diverted to digestion during the race. eat more carbs than protein or fiber for this meal.

during warmup i'll drink from a mixture of heed and hammergel in a regular bottle of water. i don't finish the whole bottle; then the rest for recovery drink after the race.

race prep for me starts two days before hand to make sure i'm supplementing my training with food within an hour after a workout. to me, this ensures that i'm replenishing glycogen stores when the body is most able to accept them.

i'm still experimenting with variations on this theme, but it's been working so far.
