Whats the Hardest and Steepest climbs in your area?
Austin, Tx
Hardest climb is, I think, Beuford. 23% grade for 1/2 mile no flat spots to rest
Steepest is Smokey Valley. It measures 25-26% grade although it only stays at that for about 50 yards.

Here are list of most of the climbs in Austin. Beuford is listed as 19% not 23% either way it's a *****. The most popular is the Dam Loop which isn't listed. It's about 5-6% for 2.7miles.

In Chicago, the hardest climb is walking up the steps out of the North / Clybourn EL station.

Kinda hard to come by around here. You get steep or kinda long. None are over 1000 feet vertical or more than a few miles. That said, a new one on a club ride this Saturday was a bit taxing. Call it 10% for a mile, but winding so you never knew when it would top out.

It's over 20% grade, but only for an inch.

Isn't someone going to chime in and say that there's no big/steep climbs/hills in their area, but a constant 40mph headwind from every direction?

I dunno what the steepest is.....the steepest I've been on is a mile long climb that maxes out at 13% towards the top of it. I have successfully avoided anything steeper, but in the coming weeks may venture to those more difficult climbs.

Devil's Kitchen/ Platte Clove Rd. According to Gmaps, its 1.9miles long with 1110.9 ft of climbing, making the avg. grade 11%. https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=128596 I believe it maxes out at just a hair under 30%, and I've heard of people using it to practice for the Mt. Washington climb. Also, some of the pros in the Tour de Trump wound up having to push their bikes up it!
Its a great climb, and its got some amazing views.
I have some pics of it in the 5th post in this thread:

There's a pretty good climb about 15 minutes from my apartment though. I'd say probably 40% grade, for about 50 feet. Road is terrible, too. Covered in sand, mud, roots, a mountain bike trail...

I think some of those Austin grades might be a hair off (in both directions). How accurate are handlebar mounted incline readers?

Keep on climbing
The best sustained climb here in central Massachusetts is Mt. Wachusett. The first mile is about 9%; it eases off a bit from there, but it's another two miles or so to the top.
There's no end to little rolling hills here in central Massachusetts / north-east Connecticut that get ridiculously steep, but they're pretty short.
If I can include New Hampshire, Hurricane Mountain Road is 17% for two miles (if you believe the sign at the top). It is frighteningly steep to descend. The road is in such bad shape that it can take longer to descend then it takes to get UP. Mt. Washington is infamous, but it's only open to cyclists for two days a year. Crawford Notch is a mile at 15%. Vermont has Ascutney Mountain which is four miles at 12% or so, along with Smuggler's Notch (400 yards at 25%).

Toughest climb that I've done is a tossup between Page Mill to Skyway in Palo Alto, which climbs about 2000 feet in 7 miles (but 1800 in the first 5). It's a pretty varying climb, some parts are pretty darn steep
https://www.westernwheelers.org/main/...Climbs.html#PM
The other climb is Redwood Gulch road. It's only two miles, but an avg grade of over 9%, some spots are near 20%.
