Mullholand Challenge 4/22/2006

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mullholand Challenge 4/22/2006

Who is going to this? Let's see if we can maybe turn this in to a BF ride? If so, lets organize a start location and roll out together
https://www.planetultra.com/MulChallenge/index.htm
$70 if you haven't registered yet.

This should be a pretty fun ride with plenty of climbing rollers. Weather looks good~

Ovoleg,

I'm thinking of doing this ride, but w/out paying the $70 (one income, 2 mortgages, 2 car payments, rent, etc...it's a long story). Last time I checked, this ride was being done on public roads , so I was thinking of riding the route but bringing along my own food and fluid. FYI for others interested -- it's 107 miles and about 10,000ft of climbing!

Then how about this (free) ride from LA Wheelmen? (https://www.lawheelmen.org/):

"Saturday, April 22 - 8:00 a.m. FLATS & HILLS TRAINER (92 mi.) Our 4th trainer is one we haven’t done in a while. It’s longer than the first 3 and it has plenty of hills. We start with Benedict Cyn. Then it’s across the valley (more hills than you would think) to Mulholland Hwy and the big hill by the Rock Store. We continue Mulholland all the way to the coast for lunch at Neptune’s Net. The good news is that when we get to the coast, we get to the “Flats” part of the ride – the Coast Hwy back to Santa Monica – if you consider hills like Zuma to be flat. Let’s hope that’s what the title is referring to and not the “tire” kind. To tell the truth, I’ve never been sure what the “Flats” in the title refers to. It seems like it’s all hills. NOTE: This is the official century for April for those doing the “Century of the Month” thing. Also note that this starts at the “Corner” and not in Brentwood. START: THE “CORNER”, Olympic Blvd, 1 block west of La Cienega in Beverly Hills. From the Santa Monica Frwy (10), off & north La Cienega 1½ miles, L - Olympic 1 block to R- Le Doux."

Here's another one -- 64 mile (w/ 4800ft of climbing) in Los Padres National Forest that I did a few weekends ago:

Ovoleg --- I'm sorry for going off topic, but I just wanted to post some other possibilities.

I was just telling people to pay $70 if they want to follow planet ultra's meal plan . I'm not going to be paying $70 and just riding the route myself. Come on out and ride with us George!

I'm adding you to the list

OK, that'll probably work for me too --- I just didn't want to be the only not paying the $$. Yeah, George --- come on out!

Any others? worker4youth? LA_Rider? Nosra?

I thought about this briefly...really briefly! I'm doing Cruising the Conejo in the same area in 4 weeks. 103 miles with 6500' climbing which is about as much as I can probably do. I did ride Mulholland, Rock Store, Encinal, up Decker down Westlake yesterday for 35 miles and 3000' as a training ride. Since I'll do the same next weekend, I'll look for you guys! There are already some painted spots on the pavement at the top of the Rock Store climb.

Guys, some of my friends are signed up and they are starting at 7:00 and some are not signed up and are meeting the others along the way. The tentative plan is to meet at Old Topanga and Mulholland at 7:30 and ride the rest of the course self suported. Let me know what you think.

I'll be there bringing up the rear if I'm lucky enough to make the cut off times. I previewed the first 75mi last weekend and two weeks prior. Two weeks ago I missed the 7hr cut at checkpoint 3 by a few minutes. I still felt pretty good and thought I would be able to finish it up without too much trouble. Last Saturday a friend and I tried again and I finished(the first 75) with 15 minutes to spare but felt like it would be pure hell to continue on with the last 34 miles and 3000'. Completing the first 75 just 15 minutes faster really took it out of me. My goal is to get lots of sleep this week. Bone

No one wants to do the full mullholland double? Sure? Just 91 more miles...

Enjoy your rides everyone. The challenge really has the best parts of the course.

I'll be shooting for a 12 hour double, but I think that's going to be hard to make. Especially because there's only 47 riders signed up now for some reason, and I don't think I'll have much company. Last year I cracked on Stunt Road at mi 180. Those last 40+ miles of 100 ft/mi climbing are brutal whether they're miles 70-110 or 160-200.

Sounds good.

Is that near a school? Doesn't Old Topanga lead you to Topanga?

Thanks

The date is this Saturday (4/22). I haven't done a century since last August. Given the 10,000ft of climbing, this would be far and away my biggest cycling accomplishment...if I can finish.

I know you're joking about LA. But if not, don't worry, we'll protect you against the rampant LA thuggery.

This shouldn't be too bad, IMO. If we pace and don't hammer the whole way, we should be just fine.

On a side note: Celtic, your climbing has improved dramatically since I last rode with you

Yes, that is near Calabassas High. Starting there would avoid the descent of Malibu Cyn and the Climb of Topanga, maybe 25 miles? Yes, Old Topanga connects Topanga to Mulholland, the idea was to wait for the other riders as they return to Mulholland after coming back from PCH the first time. If you want to do the whole thing you should start at Agoura road and Las Virgines,(Malibu Cyn). This is the official start. Exit the 101 at Las Virgines, go left,(south),and you're there in a couple blocks. My gang is starting at 7. Dog Hair, it may be near L.A., but it's a different world on those roads.

celtic, the rides you have done the last few weeks have prepared you for this, you'll be fine. If you want to do the whole thing, let me know. We can ride with the ladies we were with Saturday and since we aren't concerned about the KOM jersey we can skip the worst climb,(Decker), and there are bail out options later in the route.
