Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, I'm sorry that you have had bad experiences with webcor/AV riders. But I rather doubt that. overall, we're any better or any worse than other clubs out there. More that, due to the size of the club and possibly the fact that anyone can join, regardless of whether they race or not, there may be some people that don't always do the right thing.

We picked it up from 7 to 18 mph and right before I meet up with the rest of my shop ride group, I let him get away.

Later at the bike shop, I'm talking to a couple Cat 2s who joke that Webcor are just a big buncha tools. I say, ''If you guys had only told me they were all tools beforehand, I wouldn't have let him get away.'' To which they say, ''Oh, don't say that. Not all of them are tools.''

''Just most of 'em.''
Hey! What's the name of the bike shop, so that I can avoid it?

Yeah, what jerks, stupid domestic pros riding their bikes faster than crap with only enough money to stay in a cheap apartment and train for up to 6 hours every day and then some of them go home to a second job or school.

WHAT is their problem.

And come on... That movie is a good cycling movie but overall is pretty akward and overrated.

Are you kidding? Most of the member of the 2005 team are a bunch of Cal and Stanford grads with Masters degrees in Physics, Engineering. etc. Talk about a group of over-educated Disco wannabee's.

family members have encountered professional basketball players in restaurants. their bahavior was awful to all around. Something about the egos of many successful jocks. Same as from high school as I recall. arrogrant. I suspect it applies to many a racing cyclist too.

I have a good friend who, like me, comes from a running background, but I've turned to the dark side and have shaved my legs and always ride in a full team kit while he rides in running shorts and a plain white t-shirt, running shoes and toe clips. He's a small guy and a great climber and he loves waiting at the bottom of big hills for decked out club riders so he can beat them to the top of the hill on his old (1990) Trek 400 with the down tube shifters.

Actually, the Alto Velo guys I've met have been just as friendly as any other club riders.

In all seriousness, AV's a big club. Like any big organizations you're going to get a few nimrods, or you might run into folks on a bad day, or who are in their own head at the time. Some people get pretty agro and silly when they get on the bike regardless of what colors they are flying, that's just human nature. But I sure wouldn't want to tar AV folks on the basis of a few bad interactions. Steve E is certainly a good guy and I've had a good time hurting and being hurt by other AV riders at the races...

Actually, only a few riders on the men's team were affiliated with Stanford. The majority of them come from other parts of California.

Ha ha. that's what I do....I generally go up foothill park slowly until I see a guy decked out in full kit, let him pass me, then at the critical moment, drop him at the the top...

Maybe my fault my friend. In my homeland of Kuril we have long dispute with Japan over territory since war. Some us ride on right like patriot, other on left like Japan. I still confused by which side to pass.
