Portland Roadies - STP in a Day

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Portland Roadies - STP in a Day

.. and anyone else who wants to ride an "STP in a Day" paceline with us. Let's get an idea of who wants to ride together, where everyone's staying, and who needs to ride share. I figure with the group we will have, we can pull off a ten hour ride time? That's almost 21 mph ave folks; I've ridden with most of you here in Portland. That's entirely doable.

We can get some meeting places and times in the next few weeks; as well as some sort of ride strategy for staying together on the ride, length of pulls up front, breaks, etc. I say we all take really short pulls up front (30-40 secs?) to stay fresh to make it to the finish in time. With twelve or more of us, we'll get almost six minutes "rest" in the draft. If you feel strong take longer pulls instead of faster pulls.

I'm staying at the College Inn and will roll in late Friday night. I'll ride home from the finish line as my wife will keep the car in Seattle overnight.

fishmel, rad, jakey, gonesh, dino, velocity, pedalmasher, 2thgrinder, formulaben, mrballistic, bertt ... chime in.

Who else? Waddya say?

Sounds great - I'm in.... First year I'm doing it as it's not the same weekend as Oregon waterfront brewfest this year! Should be a great time.

I'm affraid your pace will exclude me, but I would love to hook up with ya at the start line and get to meet some folks. Last years was 11:45, I don't think I can trim 1:45 off that.

I'm taking the train up on Friday and spending the night with a friend near the University. At this point I am planning on doing it in one-day, but my training partner might not be up for it. I would love to atleast start with the BF group and see how it goes. If I remember correctly, my friend has a refundable hotel reserved in beautiful Castle Rock.

Staying at the University tower hotel (I have a reservation, but can change if others are staying all at the same place) I haven't figured out how the hell I am getting there yet.

Need to get my act together it looks like.

Last year, I signed up one week before the event - number 8550 or something. Lodging isn't a problem for me as I have family in Ballard. But it was a lot more fun to stay at that hotel right there on 45th in the U - IHOPping it at 3:30 in the morning.

5 of us rented an SUV with a trailer for the ride up - again, planned it the week before. Worked out real well.

I suppose I should get my sheet together too.

I'm thinking 20 pound ankle weights + a trailer carrying our extra gear/water bottles, etc., should slow him down nicely.

you know guys I recall a certain someone on the way back from the halfway point of the cookie ride pulling for about 5 miles at @ 25mph (ie pedalmasher) and someone else who wanted to smack people with a rusty pipe if they passed us, not to mention that he decided to jump up front going into the first rest stop at @ 23mph into a headwind (ie Jakey). So you had it coming LOL!

I don't know what you are talking about. Goddamn sandwich destroyed me. My legs blew up too...but I think I couldve at least stayed with the second group had I eaten something else.

LOL...I hope to do the 1-day again, but I have a feeling that this year will be much faster than last year, where I barely held on. You guys are machines!

I'm a little worried as well... Its turning out as though we're gonna have Jens Voight riding tempo for 200 miles

What are you guys worried about, they says its all downhill, and Goshen9 is the one to be upfront (from what I've heard).

It'll be you, Gonesh, and Pedalmasher up front. I'm going to do my best to sit about 5th wheel all day long

I am planning on the ride but haven't made any plans yet. I am a little worried. I will be on family vacations for the 2 weeks prior to the ride and hope that will not kill me.

I've been away from Bikeforums for a while-
Was just wondering what's going on with STP this year, but it looks like it's been jumpstarted here. Still have to figure out how to get up there and where to stay...I'm definitely planning on a much different riding style then last year- I like Bigsky's idea of a good efficient paceline, everyone take short pulls. The noodle legs around mile 150 were not pleasant last year. With this group so far it looks like it will be a great ride.
