Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Walking in Road Shoes

Are there any Road shoe cleat combinations that one can walk in - into a store or restaraunt for example?

Kool Kovers makes rubber snap-on cleat covers for Look, Campagnolo, Speedplay, and SPD-SL pedals that makes it easier to walk with your shoes one, but not as well as sneakers. Lake makes a touring shoe that takes delta pattern cleats that is walkable,

SPD style recessed cleats are your best option for walking. Shimano makes a touring type shoe that accepts them well. Last year it was the TO-92, but I think they changed the model number this year. They kind of look like a mtn shoe, but with a less agressive tread. The only downside is you'll be using SPD style pedals on the road. They're great on a mtb, but just don't feel right on the road.

The mountain cleats must be different than the road cleats. The road cleats come with little rubber nubby things built onto the back of the cleat so you don't need covers. Maybe newer cleats would have the nubbies??

They look like sneakers, with all black suede. The spd cleats stick out a little, not much.

MTB shoes are the easiest road shoes to walk in Really, most of them are just road shoes with tread blocks added to them. Maybe a more waterproof upper.

I've walked into stores with cycling shoes on (road shoes with cleats).

Just walk carefully.

Yeah, but I use the "mountain" cleats on road shoes. Hence the desire for covers.

"Delta" cleats refer to the three bolt mounting pattern that Keywin first used in the 1970s that all LOOK road pedals and SPD-SL use.

I've only heard of one shoe from Lake that has a 3 hole Look pattern as well as rubber lugs.

I'm wondering why more manufacturers don't make shoes with a light duty and lightweight mountain tread that works with look cleats. It doesn't need to look like a monster truck tire. Some small replaceable lugs on the sides of the sole that sit taller than cleats would be perfect.

It seems like they all want to go for the poseur market with these wannabe race shoes. I'd bet that a whole lot of people would buy a hybrid shoe if only they were available on the market.

Good stuff here. I have used Kool Covers and Coffee Caps. Coffee Caps rock, when I take them with me. I found that Look cleats feel the most natural to me while walking because of their low profile and they are kind of soft so they "grip" better.

Then again I learned to walk in cleats before my sister learned to walk in high heels so I've never really had a problem.

Best invention shoe-wise though...SIDI's soft replaceable heel pad. Like butter and really increases traction.

I wonder if Speedplay cleats will mount on them without any mods.

The last pair of SPD cleats I bought came with these wing like things that mount under the cleat with rubber on each side so you can walk on them.

These shoes have been one of road-cycling's best kept little secrets for about seven years now. Yes, they've been around that long. I don't have the CX120 but I have its predecessor, the CX125. I have successfully mounted Speedplay cleats to it without modification but the lugs severely limited adjustability which is okay if the cleats are aligned properly for you when within the now more constricted adjustment range. With a little bit of trimming, you can open up the adjustment however. Also note that I don't have large feet and likely shoe size plays a factour in cleat-box clearance.

You also have to play a few games with the Speedplay supplied snap-shims because the sole profile is a bit different from most traditional road shoes. However, the combination is very walkable. Note that the sole of the CX125 (and I presume this is the case with the CX120 too) while fairly stiff is not as stiff as say a higher end road-racing shoe. That said, I didn't have any problems with hot-spots or cleat engagement/disengagement issues which Speedplays are known for if they're not mounted to a fairly stiff sole.

That's the shoe that I was talking about. Unfortunately, I don't like the look of it. I think that I have some OCP blood flowing in me. If only other companies would start making shoes with soles like this, but with uppers like their racing oriented shoes.

That sounds like SPD-R cleats actualy and they look fairly similar to SPD. They end up being something similar to the newer SPD-SL which has inbuilt rubber do-hicks for walking on.

You can walk on modern cleats. Just don't walk too far and exercise caution. I won't carry my bike up and down the stairs wearing SPD-SL cleats but without the bike there OK.

Regards, Anthony
