Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Question: The deeper the rim the slower the acceleration?

Boy, I keep jumping into this thread 'cause I'm really on the fence about a new wheelset and I've been looking at the Neuvations since they appear to be great wheels at a reasonable price point. My two issues have been 1) should I worry about bladed vs not and get the ones you did? We get a bit of wind around here. Then again, being lighter wheels, are you concerned about durability? 2) The ole "it's impossible to change the tire easily" issue!

Finally, My XSR-3s weigh 2070. Will a drop to 1800 (M28) honestly make a difference? Certainly 1400 gms would be a lot. I've got to drop by the local dealer who stocks these.

O.K., no one else said anything, so I'll bite. I read your initial post and you never said what you don't like about your wheels. Ksyrium Equipe's look pretty nice to begin with. What is your beef with these wheels?

They're nice. But I had originally wanted nicer. I wanted to upgrade from the start when I was purchaing the bike. In the end though I simply bought the bike with those wheels so I could try em out and see if I wanted to upgrade later. Well, its been about 8 months and I think I want to upgrade. I have a little extra cash so I want to upgrade the bike. The most impact I think I can make is by upgrading the wheels. Never really wanted them in the first place. Don't get me wrong they served me well and are good...its just that I feel I can do better.

From all the choices in this thread I'm seriously leaning toward the neuvations despite the problems people have been saying about tire installations. I just emailed the company owner John. I'm asking (pleading) that he do a custom set of R28 aeros in black rims and spokes for me. I hope he agrees.

Thats also around the same weight as the M28 aeros by neuvation. I'm looking at the R28 aeros which are only 1500 grams. Not the lightest in the world but very light for the money. If it wasn't for the fact that they only seem to come in silver I mighta pulled the trigger and bought em.

No, the lighter the wheel, the faster the acceleration.

In a tricyle race.....yes. But if the acceleration is at faster speeds say 20-30 mph the more aero wheel accelerates faster.

You're confusing speed with acceleration, you don't accelerate at 30mph. Zinn did a good report on this recently in Velonews. Lighter is faster for acceleration, aero is faster at top speed.

Well, the HEAVIER the rim the slower the acceleration. You can have a heavy box rim or a fairly light deep rim. That's why I am thinking about the Velocity Aerohead, because it's 405g. Was considering the IRD Cadence (390g) but everywhere I read seems to act like they'll taco in a sprint.

In any case it is a small difference in speed, though.

Aero rims are also radially stiffer which reduces the cyclic stress on the spokes... and that's a good thing.
Good point on the radial topic. Deeper rims take more pressure and allow shorter spokes. As for bladed spokes, I thought they were essentiall the same amount of material as round 14g spokes? I could be outdated, though, since I haven't looked at bladed spokes since 10 years ago. Also, you said AERO spokes, which are different from BLADED, and easily lighter. Either way, I'm no sure at which point aero gives way to weight. For me, I'm slow and weak, so I can't see an aero benefit when I climb hills at 10 mph. When you're racing, however, climbing hills at 20 mph probably could use the aero, plus it helps downhill as well. For recreation, I don't cry about a 1 mph loss while descending, but I pray for death up a steep climb!

Those are in fact nice wheels. Light AND aero. As for a "little more" I'm sure he could find a used set for around $500. HOWEVER I don't like to ride carbon rims recreationally or for training because it doesn't take too much to crack them. I've seen too many of them get cracked because the bike fell while leaning against a wall, someone else hit them with their pedal, etc. Of course, these were mainly on college students' bikes at the velodrome (being hung up and taken down every 10 minutes), so take that as you will.

What? Are you really saying when you go from 20mph to 30 mph you are not accelerating

When you go from 15-25 mph you are also accelerating.

FYI, Change in speed/time= acceleration. Please tell me you understood that? Geez.

I vote for hand builds. My velocity escape/dura ace hub wheels weigh in at 1500g.

As for the bladed spoke issue, you are looking at $2+ a spoke vs $1 a spoke. Sometimes cost outweighs benefits.

as urbanknight had stated, you can get a set used for around $500 but they are a race only wheel, I previously only ran them on my tri bike but now I switch them back and forth for crits as well.

Personally, I'd go with the Campy Zondas.

If your having that much trouble with bladed spokes, go to the gym and lift some weights.

Nah. I wouldn't go with them because I wouldn't trust a used carbon wheel like that and your right guys I wouldn't want to use that every day. And if I wanted one I would get it new and a set like that would be WELL over $1000.00 easy.
If I wanted tt wheels I would go for a carbon star pattern like the xentis wheels.

Ok, maybe I'm being lazy about the custom wheels. So, velocity rims, black bladed spokes (name me a brand), and what hubs?
Then I would compare the weight and the price with a set of R28 aeros from neuvation. Mind you not the m28 aeros but the R28 aeros. I emailed John at neuvation to see if he would do a custom R28 aeros with black finish.
Maybe he will respond. :|
