2006 RACC Ride
I did the 2006 RACC ride yesterday. It was my 2nd century, and 1st of this year. I was wondering what others thought of the ride?
My impression was a very nice course, with constant hills, but none that were really hard. Some great scenery. I thought the ride support was good. I will do this ride again next year, and hope that it doesn't rain so much so that I can get a better view of the natural beauty that was a bit obscured by being in a rain cloud for a good portion of the ride. |
+1, only it was my 1st century. I posted a rather lenghty detail of my ride, and I see that you summed it up much better than I did. I need to work on that :)

I looked up your account and read it. You are a very good writer, I can't wait for the movie!
I am in my second season of road biking, and am approaching 54. The best I could do was just under 15 MPH. I am very satisfied with that. To make this season better, I spent the winter riding to the top of either Bald Peak or Rocky Point every single weekend, no matter what the weather. Almost blown off my bike several times. I am still not fast, but it made the weather conditions of the 2006 RACC seem really tame in comparison! |

I think just finishing that ride was an accomplishment for you and I with those conditions, speed be damned. I too spent a lot of time climbing all winter (Mtn Livingston, and other area hills), so if I had been dressed correctly I know it would have had a much more enjoyable time. There is always next year. |
Yes, I did dress correctly, for me and for my current riding style.
I think the people who designed the PI Therme Fleece tights should win some kind of award. I was a distance runner for abouut 25 years, and with my Nike connection was able to get good technical running wear. Now after my knees stopped the running and I am biking, I am learning about biking wear. So far, I am very impressed by the products. I wore a long sleeve bike jersey under a rain jacket, and a skull cap between my bald head and helmet. Based on my much more competitive running days, I would think you could never have worn this much clothes given the higher intensity of your ride. It appears to me that the difference between 15 MPH and 18 MPH is only 20% in raw speed, but I would guess the effort required to do that to be at least 50% greater. |
