High quality carbon cycling shoes from Sidi for under $300...
Genuis 5 CARBON shoes from Sidi. Just got a pair. $299.95 list (my LBS gives me 15% off). Essentially like their top of the line shoe but with slightly less fancy closure straps and a much more conservative look. In other words when you click these heels together you don't go to friggin Kansas. Best cycling shoe I've had yet.
Love 'em. Just rode 30 miles in them. They felt a bit uncomfortable in the store, but after 10 miles on the bike they felt like slippers. Stiffer than my 6 year old Canac Carbons (which don't really have carbon soles, just carbon straps, the Sidis DO have real carbon fiber soles).
New model for Sidi. The Genius 5 shoe ($219.95 MSRP) is their biggest seller. So they added the carbon sole and created the Genuis 5 Carbon model in for $300. Which essentially gives you a shoe that's very close to some of the $400 shoes out there for a more reasonable price. And just as important they don't look like something off the Studio 54 dance floor. Basic black.

Totalcycling has the Ergo1 for 305 bucks and the Genuis 5 Carbon for 186 bucks. I've bought a lot of stuff from these guys and they are fast and reliable. Just got my Giro TT helmet from them, took about a week to get it.

The Genius 5 are the worst shoes I've ever had. Poor fit for me and lousy ventilation. I even have a pair of cycling shoes that cost less $100 that are better for me. Glad they worked out for you.

Sorry, can't buy shoes mail order. Particularly cycling shoes. For obvious (to me) reasons.
I hear you on the ventilation - the Sidis aren't the best in that dept. Doesn't bother me. Fit is more important. And THAT is incredibly individual. Believe me, they didn't feel so great in the store. But I kind of figured they'd feel fine on the bike and once they broke in a bit. And thankfully they do.
Always a bit of a crap shoot with new shoes, eh? Tried on the $400 DMT's - and they fit very poorly. Go figure.

If you need more ventilation then get the mesh versions. Sidi makes a mesh (which I have) version of both shoes. As for buying mail order, I've only worn Sidi shoes, their very consistant in their fit, a 43 is a 43 has been for me since I bought my first pair in 1989.

Does anyone have a clue of what shipping would be from the UK to the USA on a pair of shoes? Just curious. Their prices are pretty good - but they are in the UK....

LAKE carbons. They are made of a carbon polymer that is heated in the shop in a microwave, then fitted while warm to the rider's foot. Soem ski boots use this idea. It's supposed to be ideal for problem fits.

I lucked out. I got my Geniuses (in the Mega width) from my local Perf for like $98 bucks. Not sure if it was a glitch, but they said some guy had red phoned them but didn't buy them after trying them on.
I use the money I saved to get a custom footbed made at a ski shop.
