I recently sold my custom clinchers as I am making the move to tubulars...first photos are the clinchers I just sold...DT Swiss build by Mike Garcia...full up bike photo shows my new wheels which are Sun M19-AII Aero rims laced to Chorus hubs by my LBS. FWIW Mike Garcia build > than my LBS build. Not that they are bad but they aren't as good as Mike's, I have had to have them touch them up 4 times now...in 2k miles my MG wheels never saw a spoke wrench other than to redish when switched from Shimano to Campy and now back.

Hey, where are some pics of wheels with aero spokes? And no Chris King hubs? If I do make a custom set I think I'm going to want some blacked out aero rims though.

almost all of the wheels i own are custom built, and i every wheelset i own from now on will be too

my latest are a set of special drilled phil wood SLR hubs laced to zipp 360 pave rims with spaim c-xray spokes... the other set for my fixed gear are 32h phil SLRs laced to open pro cd rims with dt revolutions... and my geared custom wheels are chris king hubs laced to open pro black rims with sapim laser spokes

each set was built by a different builder, but i would have to say that richard sawaris of wheelbuilder.com was by far the best to deal with

My wheels aren't custom but they are very light, Reynolds Stratus DV's and KOM UL's, both tubulars.

At a race a couple of weeks ago I saw a set of wheel that looked very cool. The hubs were massive as where the spokes. He had them laced to red rims, blue spokes and red hubs. I have no idea if they were light or strong but they looked pretty freakn' cool.

I have no idea how much it costs but it looks pretty awesome. I like the clincher feature for an everyday wheel anyway.

I just got quoted $950 to have these wheels built up with White Inudustry H1 hubs. The quote for the just the rims is $200-$225 each.

My source was told the rim weight is 460 grams but the site states 560 grams for the weight. He says he will have to wait until he gets his shipment to verify. The H1 hubs are ~300 grams per pair. The rest would depend on spokes (choice and the number of spokes), then nipples (brass or aluminum). I am not sure how much each spoke and nipple weighs (CX Ray) so I can't quite do the calculation. If anyone has this information I would love to see a weight estimate using this rim built up with 28R/24F.

$225 each is really not that bad. Normally a Zipp would be $400 each.

I'm sure they are heavier than a all CF tubular version but then again you get an aluminum braking surface which is nice. Plus they are clincher obviously.

%$#! I like them though. If you wreck a rim you can replace it or use the hubs in some other build up later on. This is why I like custom vs pre-built, the extra versatility you have to mix and match things.

I just got my custom build from MG DT 1.1's and a new speedcific hub called serenity with his standard Wheelsmith AE15/XE/14 spokes.

I haven't mounted them yet so I can't get any pics but will do it sometime this week. I'm excited about this new wheel.

the zipps were built by richard at wheelbuilder.com. as far as costs go... the most expensive were the zipps at what i believe was under 1400, not including shipping. i got some good discounts, but the expensive components, i.e. zipp rims, king hubs, were basically what any consumer would have to pay for them.

Top quality build from John Kovacchi, 2000 miles across potholed surrey roads to date and they're still perfectly true. I haven't got a clue how much they weigh but they're not heavy!

Are there any 40mm rims that aren't carbon? I like the deepness of these but not sure I want carbon...

I think they will be near impossible to find 40mm non Carbon rims - clincher or tubular. Last rims of that depth I am aware of was the Campagnolo Shamal which were 41mm deep rims (the older version - newer black rims were 39mm)

34mm for the American Classic 420's are about as deep as current Aluminium rims go...

With most of the Carbon Clinchers such as the Alex posted above are really only a low aluminium rim with a carbon fairing. So from a reliability perspective, I think you should find them okay though very heavy.

Here are some pics of the new wheels I ordered from Mike Garcia. He had a new hubset come in called Serenity (10spd rear only) which dropped the weight a little.

644gr front and
792 gr rear.

Total was 1436.

What I think is cool is that the spokes are somewhat bladed but not as large looking as the ones that come on the Mavic Kyseriums that I see running around here.
