Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SPD Pedals in Carryon Luggage?

Anyone know if SPD pedals are permitted in carryon luggage for an airplane trip?

What about CO2 cartridges?

thanks.

co2 is not allowed to fly, despite almost certainly being safe...

I don't see how airport security could have any problem with SPD pedals. They aren't sharp or pointy

True on both counts, but, the TSA is trained to take fear of the unknown to new heights. Particularly with metal/electrical objects.

I suppose they could be afraid you'd put the pedal to the metal.

They are not any bigger than a hair dryer, an ipod or a camera. So tell them Moocher's Dad says it's OK.

Having heard horror stories concerning carying misc. bits of machine tooling through airports I am more cautious. (I once had tensile test "dog bone" specimens (after failure) in my carryon - got stopped, but got through - fyi they look like little knives)

I personally carried Speedplay X2 pedals in my carry-on between Oaklahoma City and Chicago Ohare with no issues.

Who knows, everytime I travel I take the same gear (Carry-on) with me for work, half the time the TSA is alarmed by what I carry(camera gear) and they have to hand search the entire bag, half the time they act as if it is no big deal and barely pay attention.

TSA = Thousands Standing Around

I flew with a multi-bit screwdriver, needlenose pliers and wire cutters in my carry on laptop bag in 2002...

I think if you go to tsa.gov you will find a list of prohibited items. print it out and bring it with you. I'm pretty sure the pedels are ok but if they hassle you whip out the list.

I'm not sure; if I were an airport security guy who had never seen clipless pedals before I'd be a little hesitant. What if it was actually some kind of flip-out knife or something?

A recent trip caught me with a carry on bag that I had forgotten to take a bunch of tools out of. Of all the odd things I had (CO2 inflater included) the only thing that bothered the security was my lockring wrench.

Same here. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine in the town I was travelling to for business. Lent me a bike a spare bike so I brought my Speedplay Zeros with me. They look even less like bike pedals than SPDs. I had no problems in either direction. I was going between SEA and DTW.

Prior to 9/11, airport security made me take a Kryptonite U-lock out of my carry on baggage, and put it in my checked luggage. Their reasoning was that it could be used as a weapon. Oddly enough, that idea never crossed my mind until they suggested it.

Hm.. true, I guess. A wallop to the head with one of those would definitely hurt.

What leads you to believe that they wouldn't be permiitted?

BTW What's wrong with putting them in with your checked luggage?

If you did that, how would you increase your pedalling efficiency during the flight?

I know some people don't like to check luggage but if you do, thats where I would put them. I really wouldn't want them to be taken away by a security guard. Unless they bike, I doubt they will have ever seen clipless pedals before.

With the size of the carry on bag the last guy that sat next to me had , you may as well try because it would appear that they let you carry anything on now. I still have no idea how he got to his bag to fit in that little box at the ticket counter.

I wonder how much lighter McCready's Gossamer Albatross design could be made with today's modern carbon fibre materials. The bicycle drivetrain part of it would probably be significantly lighter than 25 years ago. Set it up with a Dura Ace crankset, modern <650g carbon fibre road shoes, LOOK Keo or SPD-SL type pedals, etc. Find some country's national TT champion who can sustain a very high watt/kg ratio for half an hour to pilot it...

The Tokyo Institute of Technology recently built and flew this, it's an ultralight airplane powered by Panasonic Oxyride AA batteries.

I don't remember the amount, but the fine for taking a CO2 cartridge on board a plane is extremely high. I took my SPDs in a carry-on bag to Hawaii last summer and got a quizzical look from security, but had no problems.

Back in late 1999 I packed up my bike in a case which included my seat bag and 2 C02 cartridges ... I didn't even think about it. But, once we were up in the air .. something made me think about the C02 cartridges and whether or not they would make it in the luggage compartment without going BOOM. I truly broke a sweat and Im sure my HR was in the red zone as I tried to explain to a flight attendant about my situation. She immediately took me up to the pilots cabin .... and one of the two pilots immediately told me that he is a cyclist and that the C02 cartridges are not a threat in terms of blowing up, etc. in the luggage bay. Wooh ... I truly almost crapped my pants when it hit me.

Last month I saw a woman take a metal hiking pole, the kind that retracts with the nice metal point on the end right through TSA. Would make a much better weapon than pedals. You should be more concerned about the pedals being stolen from your unlocked bag that you have to check.

An airliner at FL330 is pressurized to an altitute of around 10,000-12,000 feet. If you take a co2 cartridge to the Andean altiplano in Peru at 12,000 feet, does it explode?
