Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tacx Fortius

Tried one of these in my LBS yesterday, and loved it. Super cool. So i've been doing some searching and hear of some issues, mainly with the software on these. Anyone have one of these, and are the problems resolved now or is it still to early to purchase one of these, do the bugs still need to be worked out???

I have an I-Magic, which is not the Fortius but uses the same software. Many people are reporting much better luck with the new software (including myself) and the Fortius seems like a solid unit.

I have an I-Magic, same software. Check the forums page (https://www.tacx.nl/phpbb2/) for tons of user opinions. I love the I-Magic as a training tool. I assume the Fortius would be as good or better.

The Tacx website seems to be down at the moment, or at least I am getting time out errors on my end. I am curious to know, though, what the difference is between their Fortis and I-Magic VR trainers. I had thought the Fortis was the software for the I-Magic system?

Also, do you need to buy the trainer and also the steering frame as well? Other than a PC of course, is there anything else needed?

Finally, are there any competing VR trainers out there from other vendors?

Thanks.

there is a difference

The Fortius trainer has a motorized electromagnetic brake system. It is more realistic for actual downhill speed and road feel. On the i-magic trainer, you must pedal downhill or you will come to a stop. The odometer and speedometer still approximate what speed you would be doing down the hill, but not as well as the Fortius trainer. The Fortius software can still be used with the i-magic system. They are both backwards and forwards compatible. If you want a better workout, get the imagic. Its going to be a while before the price drops on the fortius.
