Sounds crazy, but I might be getting bored

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sounds crazy, but I might be getting bored

Alright, everyone help me out here. I have been riding for a little under a year now, and I have found I am starting to get a little bit bored and losing motivation. I have a great bike which my parents bought for me (poor college student at a community college) and a fixed gear too. I go to bed at night wanting to ride so bad, and when it is time to go, I doodle around for so long. I find that I am not making as much time to ride as before and that I am starting to get bored (at least while off the bike).

I need some motivation here, help!

An upgrade, perhaps?

I get the same problem sometimes. Try some different routes. Even riding your normal routes backwards works.

Sign up for some cyclosportifs or cycling holidays. Nothing like the thought or riding an Etape or Marmotte with insufficient training to get you out on the bike!!!

Bordom w/ biking happends to many of us and it usually passes with time. Set a series of small obtainable goals and your quest of obtaining them can help keep your passion going.

I also keep things interesting by mixing up road biking and mountain biking. It give a new perspective on things going from one to the other. Also, both complement each other as Road biking builds endurance and stamina. Mountain biking builds power and handleing skills.

I second the racing motion.

Boredom leads to slacking, slacking leads to poor race results, poor race results lead to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to...the dark side...

Two words: bike maintenance! Sounds boring, I know, but since I have started a budget conscious build project, doing minor upgrades on my primary LBS-built bike, and now fiddling around a bit with my wife's MTB, I can actually appreciate a good ride more. It seems odd, but when I take out my bike after a nice overhaul, it feels good to know that I did the work myself and, hopefully, did a good enough job to get me out and back again. I am no where close to having the skill level of some of the other members out there (just have a look at some of the custom builds, 55/Rad's come to mind - just amazing), but I am very much so enjoying the learning process and the results... so far!

Take care,
T

+1

You'd think riding around in circles on the track would get dull, but everything happens so fast you don't even notice that you're riding in tiny circles. I can't get enough of it. I get bored on the big group rides lately, and have been doing my long road rides alone.

Why are you riding in the first place?

If its for health reasons, perhaps try jogging for a while or alternate jogging with cycling on different days.
If its for commuting then just think how much more expensive and stressful driving a car is.
If its for something to do, try meeting other cyclists as others have suggested.

Upgrades may motivate you, but the motivation is short lived unless you constantly upgrade. Of course this is assumming your current bike is not falling apart and is of good quality.

Personally, I have always used cycling as a way to relieve stress and even to meditate in a small way. On some of the quiet safer stretches you can often find time to ponder things. Since there is always stress, I always have a reason to ride.
