Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Calling all mechanics, need a quick answer

My new windsor Bristol came today. I decided to put the bike together. Everything seems to work just fine. But when i move the handlebars forward and backwards when i have the front tire up the fork and where the stem connects seems to shift a little bit, like it is loose.. Is there some bolt that I missed to put in, or is there somethign wrong with the headset. the headset is a threadless cane creek. Any input would be great guys I dont know if this is ok or if i am going to crash and burn on my new bike.

please help me out.

Did you pre-load the headset bearings before you clamped the stem to the steerer? See www.parktool.com

Take it to a bike shop before you get yourself killed.

Sounds like the headset is loose. There should be one or two alen key bolts running parrallel with the handlebars on the stem that clamp the stem to the steerer. Undo these, then tighten the alen key bolt in the middle of the top of the steerer tube untill you feel some tension but not too tight. Rotate the handlebars side to side to get a feel for it and when its tight enough retighten the bolts securing the stem to the steerer.

EDIT: Actualy having answered the question I would reccomend you taking it to a shop. The stem is one of the EASIEST things to deal with and if you don't know how a stem works I would be realy woried about the rest.

Regards, Anthony
