What is everyone wearing for a base layer?

Does anyone know if Underarmour is good for cycling? I tried it on in a sporting goods store and it felt good.

I've been using some older duofold tees underneath my jersey... they seem to do the job.. I bought them about 5 years ago for hiking and only used them once or twice... even on semi warm winer days (mid 60's here in SoCal) I have been using the long sleeves without feeling too hot or sweaty... they wick pretty good... I'm not sure if they still make duofold, or if Coolmax has sorta taken over.. but Coolmax would be a good choice as well

generic polypropylene l/s stuff... a louis garneau vest... another one with a windproof front... that kind of thing...

Polypro and silk undershirts. I still haven't found anything that works better than silk. I looked at body armour but it was REAL expensive. It looked nice though.

Nike drifit running top and a gortex shell keep me warm to the mid 20s F, below that I add a lite wool sweater, that combo keeps me tosty below 0 F

DeFeet base layer, long sleeve jersey and a Castelli jacket...nice and warm to anything above 20F...looks like I will have a chance to see if I'm still warm at colder temps this coming weekend :eek:

Like the Patagonia Capalene - silk weight as well as the light weight - when combined w/ a fleece and a shell I can handle most any weather.

Luckily we don't get very cold down here. When I first started commuting I bought expedition weight polypro top and bottom, but they are too warm at 30F which is about as cold as we usually get. Over the past couple of years I have purchased a number of lightweight Duofold Coolmax t-shirts long and short sleeves on clearance from sierratradingpost.com. I just put on as many as I think I need and it works great. This morning I had my usual short sleeve undershirt plus 3 with long sleeves. It might have been one layer too many, but I sure didn't sweat much.

I'm in the Bay Area. I put on a Defeet Un-Dee shirt, short-sleeve jersey (sometimes wool), armwarmers, and a cycling vest with open mesh back. I've been putting on two pairs of socks and Kucharik neoprene toe-warmers. For me, a pair of over-the-knee knicker-style shorts is enough to keep the knees warm.

I have an Underarmour long sleeve tee (All-season gear) which I love. Keeps me warm and dry. It's pretty rugged too. I scraped my elbow during a fall, and the shirt wasn't damaged at all! It is a bit pricey, but I also use it for hiking and skiing.

Nashbar tights over cycling shorts, when its real cold I throw another pair of loose fitting tights over this set up.

Sure needed it this morning !!!

that I got for less than $15 at local sporting/camping
goods store (REI has em too). The money I saved
there helps justify the Castelli or Etxe winter jersey I'm
gonna buy.

Thanks for all the information. Thinking about what Velocipedio and Lotek had to say about generic polypropylene, I realized that I have a surfing rashguard which I haven't been using since I got a really warm wetsuit. It's polypropylene, warm, and a great fit. I'll try it out once our heat wave ends here (Monterey Bay area). We've had temps in the mid-70s F. Hey, it's only fair: It's usually so cool around here that sometimes I have to wear arm and leg warmers in the summer.

craft is great stuff. it's also really, really pricey.

yeah $40 for a base layer is pricey, but if I'm going to be out there for 2-3 hours at a time in below freezing temps for a couple of months out of the year then it is really worth it.

I mean, after all the $ money spent on the bike and ALL the other gear what is $40 to stay warm enough to get more time OUTSIDE!!!
